According to our American colleagues at Bloomberg, Amazon is preparing one of the first connected robots for the home. It’s a big bet for the firm, which has entrusted the project with Kindles, tablets, smartphones, and the Fire media center and Echo-connected speakers to Lab126, the firm’s R&D department we already owe. The firm is eagerly hiring to accelerate the development of this project, which has now been in preparation for several years. Amazon’s job pages have dozens of job offers aimed at the target audience, for example. “software engineers specializing in robots”.
Amazon: An autonomous Alexa robot in preparation
According to our colleagues citing a source familiar with the matter, this would be the mobile version of Alexa – and unfortunately not an android robot that will do the housework for you. This would follow or go on demand to meet users at home. The prototypes will benefit from the latest camera technologies combined with machine learning to recognize people and objects. One way to make Alexa more accessible at home is to have a speaker nearby to be able to summon it right now.
The Verge reminds us that such a robot already exists, like the Jibo, Kuti or LG Hub Spot. However, these are also quite expensive. One of the most successful, Jibo, retails for $899 or a monthly subscription for $53.99, for example. Of course, it will be necessary to know at what level Amazon will set the price of this connected object, or what formula the distribution giant will offer to achieve it.
