Lo, the AI-powered devices that hath captivated the masses since the dawn of this year, such as the Humane AI pin and the Rabbit R1. The former hath faced the sharp arrows of criticism for its lofty price, thus causing all eyes to turn towards the more affordable Rabbit R1. Yet upon closer scrutiny, a question doth arise – “Wherefore could it not simply be an app?” Forsooth, the device did not offer aught of significance that one could not achieve through their own humble phone.
Verily, a post by the esteemed Mishaal Rehman hath shed light upon this matter, revealing via Android Authority that the Rabbit R1 was in truth naught but an app from the outset, operating upon some iteration of Android. The entire visage of the Rabbit R1 doth seem to be naught but the app itself. This revelation did permit Mishaal to install and run the Rabbit R1 launcher APK upon his Pixel 6A, setting it up and even crafting a “rabbithole” account to partake in the AI’s offerings. The volume buttons did guide him through the Rabbit R1 app, emulating the scroll wheel upon the R1.
A video demonstrating the launcher in action was also included. Alas, integration with other apps like Spotify and Uber was found to be fruitless on the APK, for it did require permissions of a system-level. Yet this doth demonstrate that the standalone app could have functioned with equal aplomb.
With the breaking of this news, Rabbit’s founder and CEO, Jesse Lyu, did contest the claims. A statement was issued forth declaring that the device doth operate upon a bespoke version of AOSP. His words are thus:
“Rabbit R1 is not an Android app. We are privy to the existence of unofficial rabbit OS app/website emulators. We do comprehend the fervor with which people do seek a taste of our AI and LAM ere their R1 doth arrive. Yet, to dispel any misconceptions and set the record straight, rabbit OS and LAM do run upon the clouds with a most bespoke AOSP and lower-level firmware modifications. Ergo, a local bootleg APK lacking the proper OS and Cloud endpoints shall not gain entry to our service. Rabbit OS is tailored for the R1, and we do not lend our support to third-party clients.”
‘Tis conceivable that the Rabbit R1 doth harbor within it some manner of Linux Distro. Such is inferred from its employment of Ubuntu’s tags for syncing updates as uncovered within the source code. All of this doth bode ill for the company and its product, which had already garnered scorn from the tech realm and reviewers alike.
