In the wake of its recent $6.6 billion funding round, OpenAI has raised the curtain on a new collaboration interface for ChatGPT – a beta version of which has been dubbed Canvas. Karina Nguyen, research lead for Canvas, shared her thoughts on this innovative tool via a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). Referring to it as a revolutionary platform for working with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects, Nguyen’s excitement is palpable.
Much like Claude’s Artifacts window, Canvas offers users a real-time view of the chatbot’s output in a separate window. This feature functions independently, automatically launching when ChatGPT detects scenarios where it could be useful. Users can provide feedback on generated content, highlight sections for revision, or even command the AI to gather research from the internet. A shortcuts menu provides quick access to tools such as editing suggestions, adjusting output length, debugging code, and more.
An early version of Canvas is now available to Plus and Teams subscribers, offering a new way to interact with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects. Users can access this by selecting “GPT-4o with Canvas” in the model picker. While Canvas is currently in beta, it will soon be rolled out to Enterprise and Edu users, with ChatGPT Free users gaining access post-beta release.
Stay tuned for more updates on the release timing of Canvas.
