Rusty Rabbit, a forthcoming Metroidvania brought forth by NetEase, is set to grace PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on the 17th of April.
Initially hinted at in 2023, Rusty Rabbit boasts one of the most extraordinary elevator pitches in recent memory. A 2.5D Metroidvania unfolding in a post-apocalyptic realm where endearing anthropomorphic rabbits have inherited the Earth. Originally slated for a September 2024 debut, the project faced a delay to 2025. Today, NetEase has at last bestowed upon the idiosyncratic venture a definitive release date.

The revelation arrives hand in hand with a fresh trailer offering another sneak peek into its action-packed adventurous gameplay. A middle-aged rabbit named Stamp, donning a mech suit, is seen storming through scrap heaps. The footage showcases new traversal abilities and the customization system for the mech. It exudes a hybrid essence akin to Metroid intermingled with SteamWorld Dig.
For the uninitiated, Rusty Rabbit harbors unexpected talent in its ranks. The script was penned by Gen Orobuchi, renowned for his contributions to anime such as Fate/Zero and Psycho-Pass, among others. Stamp’s voice in the Japanese version is lent by Takaya Kuroda, while the English rendition features Yong Yea. Both actors are famously associated with the role of Kiryu Kazuma in Sega’s Like a Dragon series, a connection palpable in Stamp’s weathered voice.
I had the opportunity to delve into Rusty Rabbit during Summer Game Fest 2024, and it has remained on my radar ever since. In its whimsical narrative, Earth’s rabbits have misconstrued the remnants left by humans to reconstruct their society. For example, they revere Peter Rabbit as the literal gospel and believe rabbits to be the chosen species of Earth due to this interpretation.
