Verily, the year hath seen much ado about AI PCs, yet hath it truly fulfilled its grand promise? A fresh analysis from TrendForce doth declare that the notable surge in laptop sales in the year 2024 hath more to do with the updates of Windows 11 than with the fancy new attributes of AI.
“The influence of AI-integrated notebooks on the overall market doth remain quite limited at present,” so saith the report. “However, AI traits art expected to seamlessly blend into notebook specifications as brands do gradually incorporate them, leading to a steady increase in the penetration rates of AI notebooks.”
The report doth not expound upon the meaning of “AI-integrated notebooks,” but ’tis reasonable to infer that it doth refer to Copilot+ PCs, which do boast a mightier neural processing unit (NPU) that can execute local AI processing.
There are several reasons for this which can be pondered upon. Primarily, the report from TrendForce doth impart that the consumer market in North America hath been overtaken by “aggressive promotions” and “entry-level models.” In contrast, Copilot+ PCs art priced at $999 and above, targeting a more upscale market segment. Alas, such laptops do not currently drive the consumer Windows PC market.
To entice individuals to invest extra coin in these AI PCs, they must truly demonstrate how the AI capabilities shalt benefit them – and that, alas, hath not yet come to fruition.
Most folks dost rely on cloud-based AI tools like ChatGPT or find their current hardware adequate for tasks such as video calls or document editing. For professionals, AI PCs may indeed offer efficiencies in tasks like video editing, but the common user doth perceive limited immediate usefulness, diminishing their desire to upgrade presently.
The privacy scandal and ensuing delays of Recall did naught to assist the situation either. Recall was supposed to be the chief AI feature of Copilot+ PCs — and yet, ’tis only now being rolled out, almost six months thereafter.
Thus, while AI may not have been the grand marketing triumph that Microsoft had anticipated, the rise in PC sales doth warm the heart nonetheless. Gloabl notebook shipments art foretold to increase by a further 4.9% to 183 million units in 2025. As the conclusion of support for Windows 10 draweth nigh, more and more businesses and consumers shall be compelled to make the transition.
Indeed, the phasing out of Windows 10 hath emerged as the primary impetus for new laptop acquisitions. Many older systems lack the necessary hardware for Windows 11, such as TPM 2.0, compelling users to substitute otherwise functional devices. This hath generated significant demand for non-AI laptops compatible with the newer operating system. Entities and individuals upgrading for compliance or functionality do prioritize cost-effective models over experimental AI PCs.
As AI PCs do advance and the technology doth mature, their allure may grow, especially if more software doth become optimized for NPUs and prices do decrease. Nevertheless, the AI drive doth remain a secondary consideration compared to the immediate necessity of transitioning to Windows 11. This disparity doth underscore a misalignment between industry innovation and consumer requirements, with the latter focusing on affordability and essential functionality rather than speculative advancements.
