As chronicled by The New York Times, a mere 10,000 units of the much-maligned $699 AI trinket have found homes since its debut earlier this year, a far cry from the company’s lofty goal of 100,000. Whispers abound that the Humane team seeks to offload their venture to HP for a princely sum of $1 billion.
Fashioned as a wearable “ambient” computer to be affixed to garments by means of a magnet, the Humane AI Pin purports to offer a virtual assistant endowed with the ability to field queries and administer intelligent filtering tailored to the wearer’s inclinations. Envisioned as a hands-free alternative to the ubiquitous smartphone, the Pin’s ascension to the throne of personal tech supremacy now seems a distance dream.
Upon its debut, the Humane AI Pin was met with a torrent of disparagement. Reports surfaced in May of the company’s desperation to secure a purchaser, only to be followed by a dire warning to users regarding potential combustion risks associated with the device’s charging case.
In the wake of these tribulations, rumors of Humane engaging in acquisition discussions with a slew of potential suitors, not limited to HP alone, have surfaced. These talks, ongoing since the Pin’s unfavorable reception, suggest a turbulent future awaits the beleaguered company.
Despite the dark clouds looming overhead, the architects of the Humane AI Pin maintain a facade of optimism, declining to comment on any potential sale. Former Apple stalwarts Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri remain steadfast in their dedication to their brainchild, though they admit the chasm betwixt testing and real-world employment.
Echoing through the hallowed halls of tech lore, Bongiorno professes: “Thou knowest not all ere thou doth launch.” Chaudhri, in turn, laments: “Verily, we yearn to rectify these missteps in a manner more befitting.”
