In the realm of artificial intelligence, ChatGPT stands as a divisive creation, sparking a whirlwind of emotions ranging from exhilaration to trepidation. Yet, as a recent survey unveils, disillusionment with ChatGPT may be reaching unprecedented levels.
A survey conducted by the security firm Malwarebytes has uncovered a striking revelation — 81% of respondents harbor concerns regarding the security and safety risks associated with ChatGPT. This finding underscores a growing unease surrounding the potential nefarious capabilities of OpenAI’s chatbot.
Malwarebytes, reaching out to its newsletter subscribers, posed the question, “I am concerned about the possible security and/or safety risks posed by ChatGPT,” to which a resounding 81% concurred. Additionally, a staggering 51% expressed disagreement with the belief that “ChatGPT and other AI tools will enhance Internet safety,” highlighting widespread apprehension regarding ChatGPT’s impact on online security.
The disquietude surrounding AI chatbots transcends security issues. Merely 12% of surveyed individuals agreed that “The information produced by ChatGPT is accurate,” while a majority of 55% disagreed. Furthermore, a substantial 63% lacked trust in ChatGPT’s responses, with only 10% deeming them reliable.
The recent exploits of ChatGPT in questionable activities have only fueled public apprehension. Reports of its involvement in creating malicious software and distributing counterfeit Windows 11 keys have raised alarm bells. Despite assertions that chatbot-generated malware exhibits subpar quality, concerns persist among the populace over the potential misuse of AI technology.
In response to these mounting concerns, a growing chorus of voices is advocating for a halt in the development of AI chatbots until regulatory frameworks catch up. Nearly 52% of respondents to the Malwarebytes survey supported this view, aligning with tech leaders who have issued appeals to pause ChatGPT development due to its perceived high risks.
As the debate over the future of AI chatbots rages on, the call for a temporary cessation in their advancement grows louder. In a landscape fraught with uncertainty, decision-makers are urged to heed the voices of caution and consider the ramifications of unrestrained technological progression.
