YouTube has just launched its own gaming store, which had a more limited launch last year. Games are now integrated into the core YouTube experience alongside videos. Playable Content, which was first made available in 2022, allows YouTube users to Play simple HTML5 games in the app or website to fill the downtime between videos.
The games themselves have simple tap or click controls, suitable for casual mobile gaming sessions. Rather than being downloaded locally from an app store, they are loaded into the YouTube app interface via HTML5 code. This allows Google to offer Playable games for freeWithout in-app purchases or paid unlocks, the platform’s payment rules are called into question. The games also do not currently display adsbut this may change in the future.
Previously limited to YouTube Premium members, the Playables program is now available on desktop and mobile devices. On the desktop, you can find it in the Explore menu, hidden under the three-line action button. You’ll find it at the bottom of the Explore list, under Podcasts. On mobile devices, you can swipe from the left side of the screen to open the Explore menu. You can also tap the compass button below the YouTube logo.
Right now Playables’ goal is to: Ensuring YouTube users stay engaged with the app’s ecosystem throughout long sessions. Mini games provide a little distraction between watching videos rather than replacing apps entirely.
YouTube is copying Netflix with its own catalog of games
YouTube isn’t the first video streaming platform to enter the gaming world. Netflix has created its own catalog of games for its subscribers. But YouTube’s approach is unique in that it integrates games directly into the main viewing experience.
It is not yet known whether Playable content will be played between YouTube videos. Mobile gamers have no shortage of excellent free-to-play options on Android and iOS. However, the ease with which it is possible to access games instantly, Playable Content An advantage for viewers looking for a quick solution.
The full rollout of playable games is still ongoing, so not all users will see mobile or desktop gaming options immediately. However, as the launch progresses, they will be available to all viewers across YouTube’s apps and website in the coming weeks.
