The second reveals the discovery of a patent written by Tobias Kleanthous, a developer responsible for character animation and artificial intelligence who worked at Rockstar from 2014 to 2021.

His patent, solemnly titled “System and method of movement of virtual characters,” describes a new way to animate characters in a video game. Internet user Tobbelobben30, who found the document, defines the technology as follows: “building blocks”, can be combined to create a wide variety of animations.

“For example, imagine a character walking in the rain and feeling tired or injured. “Instead of designing separate animations for each of these situations, they use these building blocks to naturally combine the character’s movements.”, explains Tobbelobben30. This way, Rockstar can increase player immersion by allowing its NPCs to realistically adapt to each situation.

Of course, there is nothing to say that this technology will be used in GTA 6. Like every company, Rockstar issues patents that may not need to be implemented immediately. However, the studio’s previous game, Red Dead Redemption 2, had already made a big leap in the industry with the realism of its extreme animations. It is not impossible for GTA 6 to continue on this path.
