Dozens of Fitbit accounts were hacked last month. Criminals used email account leaks from third-party sites to log into accounts. BuzzFeed News discovered at least 24 similar caseshowever, the company declined to disclose how many of its customers were actually affected by these attacks.
Concretely, once the criminals hijack the accounts, they automatically change the passwords and some sensitive details. Several users immediately tried to connect to their emails, but only got the message: “threatable123”, the hacker’s signature.
Panicked, they took their complaints to Fitbit’s forum so that the company could take responsibility for these threats. But instead of apologies and promises of increased security, the latter contented itself with accusing the plaintiffs of negligence.
Predictably, this response caused a whirlwind of discontent in the ranks of users. In a message, the company called them stop using the same passwords on other accounts Redirecting them to a general online security tips page to get their account back.
A customer service manager secretly stated on the forum that the source of the attack was in Ireland, but his post was quickly deleted. No doubt for users: Fitbit tries to cover up the deal. One thing is certain now, that the leader of the activity monitors has strides to make in terms of data security. Meanwhile, the American brand took advantage of CES to reveal its latest product, a smartwatch with a 5-day battery life.
