The Last of Us Remake Tools are located in five different locations throughout the game, each of which provides access to new weapon upgrades on the workbenches. Unlike parts, vehicles can be used endlessly, but you will still need these parts for upgrades they unlock because one makes the upgrade accessible and the other pays for it. There are only five red toolboxes throughout the game, and once you get past one, you’re out of luck unless you reinstall a save, so we’ve outlined where to find all the Tools in Last of Us Part 1 Remake.
All Last of Us Remake Tool locations
Last of Us Part 1 has five red toolboxes located at the following levels/areas:
- Bill’s Town, under the church
- Pittsburgh, in the first garage
- Suburban, in sewer tunnels
- University, in the science building
- Bus Depot, in triage tents
We’ll go into more detail about where they are below, but remember that you’re usually looking for red toolboxes that display a certain amount of prominently – once you’re in the same room with them, they’ll be hard to miss. Tools are vital to getting the most out of your arsenal, and late game The Last of Us weapon upgrades will make a huge difference when you keep blowers, clickers, and thugs out of the way.

After meeting Bill, he’ll take you and Ellie to a church basement, where you’ll get one of the best The Last of Us weapons, the Pump Shotgun, and the Nail Grenade for the first time in the game. Don’t leave the church yet – look at the left alcove in the basement, in front of the counter (assuming your back is to the stairs leading up). Looking inside, the Toolbox is on the left, above a cabinet with a few items underneath. It’s definitely worth getting this before doing any upgrades in said Workbench, because that way you’ll have more options to choose from.
This is too early in Pittsburgh – just after the Hunters’ ambush, Ellie will help you remove a metal door leading to a garage once the first area is secure and inside, the Toolbox is directly to your left and to the left of the vehicle. The game’s first smoke bomb. Be warned that Pittsburgh is a pretty hilly area, and upgrading as soon as possible will help you deal with the dangerous elements later, like The Last of Us Keycard hunt in the hotel basement.
While Ellie navigates the sewers with Henry and Sam, there will be a spot where you have to float Ellie above the water on a pallet so she can power a generator for a moving platform. Once the platform takes you across, walk down the newly accessible tunnel and follow the first door on the left (there will be a sign next to it that says DANGER: BOILER ROOM. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY). Inside, a small room with folding chairs; besides that there is the toolbox you are looking for.
The University has the fourth toolbox, well ahead of the level. When you manage to get in through the window of the science building, after breaking the door with the wheelie bin, follow the corridor on the left to Room 205 (Lecture Room). It’s a Shiv Gate – open it with a knife and right in front of you is a counter with the toolbox prominently displayed. There’s also one of The Last of Us Tutorials here, so be sure to grab this and a few The Last of Us supplements before continuing.
The last toolbox in the game, after dealing with giraffes at the bus depot, Ellie and Joel on the other hand will enter a triage – now a long-abandoned collection of medical tents. You’ll know you’re in the right area when Joel comments on this place, bringing back memories; To get the last tool, go to the second open tent on the left – the largest – and the toolbox will be on your right. There’s even a workbench in the upper right corner of this area for you to work on.
