Elden Ring Great Runes is an invaluable boss reward that can give you a huge advantage once you master its secrets. So we will explain to you exactly what to do in a way that the game does not. When you first get one of these, it’s a big mystery – you really don’t know what they are or what you can do with them.
The easiest explanation is that by defeating most Elden Ring main bosses, you get a Great Rune that can empower you in different ways. Each of them will give you different abilities or buffs that can strengthen your character, but only after activating them.
However, to get a Great Rune you need to kill a certain shardbearer boss, you can’t get them from anyone. Once you have one, you will need to visit a specific Divine Tower to activate them. And it’s not over: Once you’ve activated one, you’ll need to find and consume Rune Arcs to power them up in the Elden Ring. As complicated as it sounds, you only need two (any two) to advance the story, meaning you can choose your fights and do as much or as little as you want.
We’ll cover below how to find and restore Elden Ring Great Runes, what each does, and how to group the Rune Arcs needed to power them up.

Great Runes in Elden Ring revealed
Many major bosses in Elden Ring drop Great Runes, legendary artifacts that can be added to your character for potential power-ups if limited. After restoring one, you can navigate to any Grace Site and use the “Great Runes” menu option to effectively place it in the Great Rune slot.
This is where things get complicated. On their own, Great Runes do nothing, but if you use a consumable Rune Arc while equipped with one, it will have a temporary effect on you, depending on the Great Rune you have in the slot. For example, using a Rune Arc effectively equipped with Godrick’s Great Rune gives a temporary bonus to all your attributes, making you better at everything for a short time. Radahn’s Great Rune increases your health, stamina and FP. Whichever you choose, it’s always a powerful ability and one that serves well when used just before or even during boss fights.
How to get Great Runes
Great Runes are unique items found by killing the game’s main bosses such as Godrick, Renalla, and Radahn. If you want a hint on where to find the next one, go back to the Roundtable and talk to Gideon Ofnir, who can tell you all about it.
All Major Runes listed
There are a total of six eligible Great Runes where players can find an equipment, and several similar items are available (such as the Unborn Great Rune that cannot be “used” except to unlock a new type of merchant service). big NPC).
However, we’ve listed all the Great Runes below, including what they do, what bosses you need to hack to get them, and where in the world these bosses are located. Note that you will need to restore all of these before they are used (explained below).
| Great Rune | Manager | Location | Effect when triggered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Godrick’s Great Rune | imbued godrick | Stormveil Castle / Limgrave | Increases all Attributes by 5 |

Most of the effects of these Great Runes, if powerful, are quite simple. Morgott gives you a ton of more health, Godrick improves everything about you, and Malenia turns it into Bloodborne.
The exception is the Great Rune of Mogh, which is… complex. If you trigger the Rune before summoning an Ash Spirit Summon (like Lone Wolves or Mimic Tear), they will come with a Blessing of Blood that gives them a red smoky effect. Moreover, all the enemies killed by these summons while you stand close to them, joyful restored health – effectively gives lifesteal to all these summons for your character. There’s also a secondary effect where when your summons triggers the Bleed state effect on an enemy, it provides a damage boost, increasing the kill probability.
But there is more! If a player has Mohg’s Great Rune and is invaded by another player, the invader receives a special consumable called the Phantom Great Rune. When triggered, all enemy NPCs near the invader receive this Blessing of Blood. This means that if you are invading a player, you can increase all nearby monsters, making it even more dangerous. How bad!
How to restore Great Runes
Any Great Runes you find should be empowered in a Divine Tower, and especially in the Tower in the same area as the boss that dropped that Great Rune. For example, killing Renalla in Raya Lucaria Liurnia Academy will require you to restore the Great Rune in the nearby Divine Tower. It will only work for that particular Great Rune, and you will only have to do it once. This is true throughout the game, but some Towers are harder to get into than others and require you to kill tough enemies, find items or solve puzzles. They all follow the same visual theme that characterizes them – massive layered structures made of dark stone, often (though not always) with a bridge stretching to another point midway. We even explained how to find the first of these and restore Godrick’s Great Rune in our guide on how to find the Divine Tower of Limgrave in Elden Ring.
Elden Ring Build Arc farming
Rune Bows used to power Great Runes in the Elden Ring are rare and mostly With a few exceptions, there’s no real pattern for where to find them. They tend to be found in more structured areas after Godrick – buildings, temples, places of power, or those associated with big bosses – although they may appear outside of them. The trader on the cliffs between Raya Lucaria Academy and Dectus’ Grand Lift even sells a few like the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. If you want something more efficient than just exploring, here are two options.
However, we did find an enemy that seemed to have a small chance of taking them down: standard giant rats spawning in various parts of the Lands Between, such as the basements under Stormveil Castle or the beams of Liurnia’s Divine Tower. We have found that rats sometimes drop Rune Arcs when killed, but at such a slow rate that farming cannot be rewarded quickly. Still, if you’re battling a boss, the chance to gain power may make it worth doing. Increase your Arcane stat for the best Item Discovery chance and try to kill them as efficiently as possible.
- Go kill bosses in other games. If you need Rune Arcs, the most efficient way to do so is to help other players kill bosses, which will always reward the helping player with a Rune Arc (and lots of Runes). Find an easier or low-level boss, leave a gold call sign outside the door and wait to be summoned.
- Cut the rats. Standard giant rats spawning in various parts of the Intermediate Lands, such as the basements under Stormveil Castle or the beams of Liurnia’s Divine Tower, can be used to raise Rune Bows. We’ve seen rats drop them occasionally when they kill them, but farming at a slow enough rate wouldn’t be immediately rewarded. Still, if you’re battling a boss, the chance to gain power may make it worth doing. Increase your Arcane stat for the best Item Discovery chance and try to kill them as efficiently as possible.
