Huawei was developing a speaker connected to Google Assistant before the Trump decree

Huawei was about to introduce a new connected speaker under Google Assistant before it became the target of American sanctions as part of the trade war between China and the United States. The manufacturer was aiming to launch the product at IFA 2019, which will take place in Berlin from September 6-11.

However, the project has now been cancelled. The brand’s room for maneuver has been greatly reduced in terms of both its relationships with Google and distributors who can market the device in the American market. We do not know about the hardware or features of the smart speaker: we only know that it has been working on it for about a year.

In any case, it’s interesting to note that Huawei and Google became very close in the months before the Trump decree. In addition to this smart speaker project under Assistant, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has joined the Android 10 Q beta program, a first for a smartphone of the brand. Whether the connected speaker project is simply suspended or abandoned altogether remains to be seen. While Huawei is suspected of closeness and spying on Chinese officials, it’s true that the context for launching a connected speaker is really bad. A mistake made by Facebook, which launched its Portal-connected speaker a few months after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Google, Amazon and Apple also depend on the use of data that is regularly processed by Assistant, Alexa and Siri.
