iPhone X Increases Snapchat Face Filters to 11

The new iPhone X has a massive selfie camera upgrade, partly available for Face ID, but the same technology that helps protect your iPhone will get your Snapchat selfies up to 11.

Apple now uses a front camera that can map your face using 30,000 dots of IR light. This is a major upgrade in the face mapping technology Snapchat Lenses are currently using, and it means Snapchat Lenses will look much better on the iPhone X this fall.

In the photo below, you can see Craig Federighi demonstrating this new feature on stage using the iPhone X, which Apple pronounces as iPhone 10. He’s using a special version of Snapchat that hasn’t been released yet.

This is just one of the Snapchat Lenses available in the app, and Federighi hasn’t finished showing off this upgraded feature. Talking about how well the iPhone X can follow his face and display metallic highlights, he switched to a second mask covered in gold roses.

On a regular iPhone you might find Snapchat Lenses get confused and move to one side or fail, but the sensors that enable Face ID also make this tracking better on the iPhone X. You can see where her eyes appear in the picture above. and despite being at a certain angle, the mask follows it very well.

iPhone X tracks your face better than iPhone 8 and older iPhones.

Compare that to the Snapchat Lenses below taken using the iPhone 7 Plus. You can see that there are some areas around the edges of the face in the ET filter, and the other Snapchat Lense is not picking up the face correctly when I’m not looking directly at the camera.

iPhone 7 can’t match iPhone X when it comes to Snapchat skills.

Users won’t get major upgrades to Snapchat lenses with iOS 11 or even iPhone 8. This is a feature you can only find on the iPhone X, starting at $999. iPhone X includes a special set of sensors that can map your face in incredible detail. These sensors enable secure unlocking of your iPhone, Apple Pay and also enable animated emoji Animoji on iPhone X.
