Is It Safe To Wirelessly Charge iPhone With Wallet Case?

One of our favorite iPhone 8 and iPhone X features is the ability to charge wirelessly. This leads to an important question of many users who like to carry their credit cards on the back of their iPhone. “Is it safe to wirelessly charge iPhone with credit cards in a wallet case?”

We contacted the President and CEO of Matt Altschul. Silk To learn more about wirelessly charging new iPhones with credit cards in a wallet. Silk makes the Silk Q-Card iPhone Wallet case that lets you put a few cards inside, and recently Silk showed off a series of wireless chargers that work with the iPhone 8 in one of these cases.

The short answer is yes, you can use an iPhone wallet case with wireless charging without worrying about damaging your credit cards or your iPhone, but you may not want to use it while traveling.

Altschul told Gotta Be Mobile: “After more than two and a half years of wireless charging via our Q Card Case on the Galaxy S6, S7, and S8, we’ve had no reports of demagnetized credit cards, even after years of uninterrupted wireless charging cards and through the safe.”

Besides looking at reviews, Silk folks have been testing this on other Android phones for years. “Members of our team have tested this on their personal phones for years with the same credit cards without issue. But the much larger sample base is sales to our customers on Amazon. If there’s a problem with a product, trust me when I say it, you’ll hear Amazon reviews and customer support tickets. We just heard reports that everything was going well.”

While most of these tests are done with Android phones, they use the same wireless charging technology and the same qi wireless charging standard. Altschul says: “We would get a similar question about why phones themselves cause demagnetization, but they don’t. The only exception to this (and possibly for wireless charging) are old magnetic hotel key cards. They operate with a very weak temporary magnetic charge. So if you sneeze too close to them, these suckers can demagnetize.”

You can charge your iPhone with the wallet case on when you’re at home or driving with a wireless charger. The only real catches you need to pay attention to are the thickness of the case and your cards. Some chargers work with cases up to 3mm thick, while others are rated for 5mm thick.
