Games and video streaming services have seen a massive increase in their user base, as the COVID-19 pandemic has kept us confined to our homes to prevent the spread of the virus. Amazon rushed to add a new “Watch Party” to its Prime Video streaming service, starting with the US almost six months ago. This feature is now available to Amazon Prime users in India. It allows them to watch movies and TV shows with their friends and family members.
Create an Amazon Prime Video Watch Party
If you are someone who wants to watch movies and TV shows with friends, follow these steps to create a Watch Party on Amazon Prime Video:
Start an Amazon Prime Video Party
1. Go to Amazon Prime Video’s website and sign in. Now select the movie or TV show you want to watch with your friends and family.
2. Open the movie/series landing page to see a new movie/series. ‘Watch Party’ button on the right.
note: If you are hosting a Watch Party for a mid-season TV show, clicking the ‘Watch Party’ button in the top right will play the next episode. To watch a specific episode with your friends/family, go to the ‘Episode List’ and click the ‘Watch Party’ button for the specific episode you want to watch together.
3. After clicking the ‘Watch Party’ button, Amazon Prime Video will ask you to enter the name you want to use while chatting. Then click on ‘Create Watch Party’ button.
4. Now that you have created an Amazon Prime Video Watch Party, copy the link from the right-hand pane and share it with your friends. A maximum of 100 users can attend the viewing party at the same time. All must have individual Prime memberships.
5. This right-hand pane contains the Settings and Chat view. You can see who joined and who left the watch party in the chat view (as seen below). The chat experience is very simple. You can only send text messages and a handful of built-in emojis.
6. The person who started the Amazon Prime Video Watch Party is also the host. They are the only ones who can control the playback. The host can play, pause and fast forward or rewind the content for all users. If you joined using the link, you are only a participant who has the right to control the audio and subtitles.
End the Amazon Prime Video Watch Party
If you’ve binge-watched Mirzapur or The Office with your friends, here are the steps you need to follow to end an Amazon Prime Video Watch Party:
1. Under the Settings tab in the right-hand pane, under the Watch Party details section, you will see an ‘End Watch Party’ button.
2. Amazon Prime Video Confirm if you want to end the Watch Party Once you click the ‘End Watch Party’ button. Click ‘Yes’ and you will be returned to the main website.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which devices support Amazon’s Watch Party feature?
Unfortunately, the Watch Party feature is currently only supported in web browsers (excluding Safari). You cannot join via your smartphone, tablet, smart TV, or Fire TV devices.
Can non-Prime members join a Watch Party?
No. You must have an Amazon Prime subscription to participate in a Watch Party. If you click on an invite link, the website will ask you to purchase a subscription (starting at Rs 129 per month) to attend the meeting.
