How to Record Time-lapse Video of Mac Screen 1

How to Record Time-lapse Video of Mac Screen

You’ll find time-lapse videos on a variety of topics on Instagram stories, Instagram Reels, and even YouTube. Artists making art or sculpture, chefs demonstrating their cooking skills, and others. That’s the beauty of accelerated time, which allows makers to demonstrate the detailed process of doing something in one or more minutes. While most people are using phones, you can record everything on your Mac’s screen using a special app.

I know, you’ll be wondering: Why bother with a dedicated app when you can use any screen recorder app? Well, you still need to edit these videos to create a time-lapse from them. That’s why a custom app works. You can record time-lapse videos to show you the process of making a digital picture of your workflow or montage clips. You can even add multiple clips to a single screen on Instagram, making it a great and different story.

This is how I started using the new Hustl app for Mac to record smaller time-lapse videos for graphics or images I created using Pixelmator.

The best part about the time-lapse app is that it doesn’t actually record a video. The app takes a series of screenshots and then stitches them together according to your preferences.

It’s hard to remember exact shortcuts or setting names, as I often try several apps. These time-lapse videos help me quickly catch up on my past work on my Mac. Here is how you can record time-lapse video of your mac screen using Hustl.

First, you need to get the accelerated recording Hustl app for Mac. You can get the Hustl app for $29.99 directly from the developer’s site. But I will tell you how to get it cheaper than that.

You can get it for free for $9.99 per month with a SetApp subscription. With this app store subscription, you can use more than 200 apps every month for free.

This is how you can enjoy Hustl and many other apps by paying for the subscription.

After installing the Hustl app, you need to set the preferences for recording different types of time-lapse videos. Here is how you can set it up and configure it to record time-lapse videos according to your need and convenience.

Stage 1: Start Hustl and you will see it running silently in the Menu bar.

Stage 3: Go to the Recording tab.

This is where the main settings are, which will allow you to fine-tune your time-lapse video.

Record Tab Hustl app

Let’s understand the different settings to set your expectations and choose suitable options for videos.

Record

Below this section you will need to select the Seconds time between shots when making a time-lapse recording. It means the interval between shots to determine the speed of the final video. The app lets you choose one of seven interval seconds settings – 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 seconds.

After that, you need to select the Recording quality between normal and maximum. As mentioned in the window, Maximum quality can force your MacBook’s fan (if it has one) to run faster than normal.

There is one important option – Always set the crop area to full screen. Select the checkbox if you want to record all events such as access to different menu options and the clock in the upper right corner. Otherwise, you’ll have to settle for just a cropped or selected look, which is entirely up to you. So, if you leave the box unchecked, the app will open with a customizable box to set the area of your Mac’s screen you want to record.

This area will help you with the final output of your time-lapse. You can choose between 12, 24, 30 or 60 frames per second when you need to export the video. Yes, you can predefine in which FPS you want to save your accelerated speed.

FPS Option Hustl app

Of course, you can choose the resolution ranging from 480p to 8K from the drop-down option. Choosing a higher resolution and higher frames per second means your Mac will have to work extra hard and make sure you select the appropriate options.

Currently, you can only choose between MP4 and MOV file types. Fortunately, these are universally accepted video formats.

After choosing the options, it’s time to prepare for the session. Finally, launch the app or activity you want to perform.

Record Great Time Lapse Videos

Now you know how to record time-lapse videos of your Mac screen for entertainment or reference. I used the app to record lots of clips for reference. The best thing about a custom accelerated app is that you save a lot of time and energy. Otherwise, you’ll need to record your Mac’s screen first, then open it in a video editor to convert it to time-lapse video. And finally, export. Therefore, imagine the number of steps you skipped.
