How to Save WordPress Posts to Your Computer

From server failures to malicious, targeted attacks, many reasons to back up your content. If you run a WordPress website, chances are your content is mostly in your posts. Backing up your website is easy enough, but discrete, easy-to-read files. Still, let’s say you don’t want to back up your entire website, but you want to save a single WordPress post and it in a format that can be easily shared and read by people with no coding knowledge.

Export and Save All Your Posts and Media

WordPress has a function you can use. export your content as an XML file. This format is especially useful if you want to migrate your website or transfer some of your content to a different WordPress website.

First, select the option to get to the Export screen. Tools/Export Create your WordPress dashboard menu.

You can save a single post as a PDF from your browser. Just upload a post and Ctrl+P If you are a PC user or Command+P if you are a Mac user.

This is a command to print physical copies of your content, but also save as PDF and configure the page layout and spacing you want to save. Then when you click Save When you click the button, you just have to name your file and choose a save destination.

This is how you can easily use your browser’s functions to save or print individual posts.

How to Save Multiple WordPress Posts as PDFs or eBooks

But what if you have a large amount of content and want to save it all in PDF or eBook format? You will need a plugin to do this and if the plugin we are going to use is Print My Blog. This plugin not only removes menus, sidebars and other content you don’t need in an eBook or printout, but also has a wide variety of options if you want to make your posts available offline or to eBook reader users.

After installing and activating the plugin, you will be redirected to the plugin’s page. choose Visit the Print Now page.

Depending on the type of finished product you want, you may want to include or exclude some or all of your shipping data.

Finally, you will find Page layout Options. you can choose to set a page break for each postand change font and image sizeor include or leave out hyperlinks. For example, if you want a physical copy on paper, you can choose smaller images or hide them completely to save paper and ink and also remove hyperlinks. If you only want to distribute your content digitally, you may not have similar concerns. Also note that you can only create text-only eBooks using the (totally free) method we will be using.

At the bottom of the page, troubleshooting options. If applicable, you can adjust your post render time or include JavaScript or ungenerated shortcodes to avoid errors with images; both of these can cause errors when included.

When you’re done, just click Prepare a Print Page button.

You will be redirected to the preview page. The exact results will vary depending on the options and format you choose. For hard copies and PDFs, simply click a button to print or save your content as PDF.

If you have chosen eBook for your format though, you will be prompted to use dotEPUB, a free and user-friendly eBook creator, to create an eBook. To do this, simply go to: dotEPUB’s Creator page.

There, you can enter your title and author data.

Now the plugin has converted your post data to a format compatible with dotEPUB as set. Simply select and copy all your content from the preview page…

…and paste it into the text window of dotEPUB.

click Preview continue.

You will then be prompted to download your converted content as MOBI, Kindle format, or EPUB, which most mobile, tablet and desktop apps are made for reading. Choose your preferred format and download ebook button. Your download will start automatically.

You can now have your submissions ready for distribution in a human-readable format (PDF), hard copy, or eBook.

How to Save Your Shipments for Migration

Finally, you may want to convert your posts to a format that will allow you to migrate them to another website. There are many reasons you might want to do this: cost reduction, website redesign, server space, host bandwidth, rebranding, to name a few.

Unfortunately, this is where we run into compatibility issues. If you’re migrating your content from one WordPress website to another, that’s fine. Export all the content you want as described above and import it into your new website. If you’re trying to migrate your website from another platform, that’s a whole different kettle of things. Again, trying to cover the details of each possible migration would take up an excessive amount of space.
