The stereotype that an image is worth a thousand words is still alive and well, but photography has certainly lost some of its power since the heyday of print media. The limited space and the expensiveness of the photos were simply attributed to their importance and respect as a medium. But today’s digital media has endless room for photos that are also getting cheaper. So much so that some types of images can start to get in the way of good website design. Which brings us to the current topic – hiding featured image on individual posts in WordPress.
If you’ve been looking for a checkbox or setting to hide the featured image in a post on your website, don’t worry. There are at least two ways to make the featured image appear only when you want it, and we cover both – saving you the trouble of searching for a solution that doesn’t exist on your website. So sit back and get ready to read:
The main purpose of the featured image was to serve as a kind of thumbnail when posts are listed on your website’s blog page or, for example, on your blog’s homepage. Sure, it’s better to set the mood for a how-to article than to serve as an example, but there’s still a lot of value in having that thumbnail to grab attention and get people to click on that article.
But the problem is that featured images are used for more than that. Depending on the theme you use for your website, a featured image can serve as anything from a headline to a source of headache-inducing clutter, you just have to remove it so you can stop the attack on your visitors’ senses. But of course you don’t want to remove them all, as this will make the website look bland.
That’s why the featured images are lacking in the app, even though it’s a great concept. It may not be their fault, as it is often the WordPress theme creators who find new and uninteresting uses for the thumbnail. Let’s see how you put an end to this madness.

If there’s mention of an option that shares its name with the theme or even the studio that created it, have a look around. This is where you can find theme options not found anywhere else, and that’s exactly why your featured image transition could be among them.
If you’re lucky in your quest to restore the featured image as the source of the thumbnail, don’t worry. For this WordPress, i.e. anything core developers, or in this case theme developers, forgot to develop, many people did just that and released the feature as a plugin.
You will notice that there are several plugins on WordPress.org that take care of featured images. Today we will show you Conditionally show featured images on individual posts and pages. The name might be a mouthful, sure, but the plugin is well-rated, regularly maintained, and often featured in featured image-related articles. Just below the featured image option, you should see a checkbox that allows you to prevent the featured image from being displayed in the singular view. While this will not allow it to be used as a header or header image, it will retain its functionality as a thumbnail.
