There are many interesting ways to create a certain look and feel for your website – if that’s what you want. Sometimes it is much easier and possibly more productive to have a limited number of options to choose from. The first level of customization is usually the theme.. For some it may be the last level because a good theme can easily create a look that fits the role of the website. For example, if you’re in the restaurant business, you might choose a food and restaurant theme for your website and you’re done with it. Or if you have an IT startup, you can decide on a great tech WordPress theme.
Each theme comes with some customization options. For example, you can choose page layouts or the appearance of certain elements on the page. However, if you want to make some changes beyond what comes with the theme, using custom CSS can be a good way to go. Here are three ways to do it.
The most convenient way to add custom CSS to your website is to use the Customizer.. Find the “View” option in the clipboard menu. Hover over it and you will see the “Customize” button. Click on it to enter the customizer.
Once inside, you will have access to different customization options depending on the theme and plugins you have installed. At the bottom there will be an option “Additional CSS”.
Click on it and you will enter the area where you can add all the custom CSS you want. You’ll be able to see the effects of every change you make in real time, but they won’t be published until you hit the “publish” button.
The WYSIWYG nature of the customizer may be its strongest benefit, but it’s not its only benefit. It comes with WordPress as a core feature, so you can use it right out of the box without any additional tampering with the plugins. You’ll also get a pretty simple check to make sure your syntax is fine.
The problem with adding custom CSS this way is that it all depends on your theme.. If you want to switch to another, custom CSS won’t follow. At least not on its own, so you can always copy it into your new theme.
The Additional CSS field in the customizer is not the only place where you can add custom CSS to your WordPress website. If you want to make a lot of changes using hundreds of lines of code, your theme’s style sheet might be a good place to do it.
Editing a style sheet is an advanced process and doesn’t mean you understand CSS well enough to be able to add hundreds of lines of code just when customizing the website. The main problem with editing a style sheet is that every time you update your theme, your edits are deleted.
The way around this problem is to create a child theme. The best way to understand what a WordPress child theme is would be to think of it as a layer you create over the regular parent theme. Changes you make in this layer will remain the same even when you update the parent theme.
So, if you want to add custom CSS to your website, you need to: create a child theme first. Then go to Theme Editor, find stylesheet.css and release your custom CSS code.
For example, if you want to add custom CSS that will survive after the theme is completely changed, neither the Customizer nor the style sheet editing will cut it, for example. However, you can still make changes that you can move to a different theme using a custom CSS plugin like below. Simple Custom CSS plugin.
After downloading and installing the Simple Custom CSS plugin, there will be two ways to access it. To go to the administration screen of the plugin, you can go to the appearance option of the main menu and then select Custom CSS from the submenu. You can add custom CSS to the window and click the “Update Custom CSS” button to save the changes.
It is also possible to use Simple Custom CSS from the customizer. Go to Customizer – Appearance > Customize – then click on the “Simple Custom CSS” tab and you will be taken to the plugin’s customizer section. Here you will see a preview of all the changes you have made before saving them.
