Most of us use a mouse to navigate on a Windows computer, some with a laptop but prefer a mouse over a touchpad. Several Windows users are facing an issue where the mouse cursor moves on its own unaided. This may sound like the ghost of a nerd in the game, but it’s actually a common bug in Windows 10.
This is mostly a software issue; this means we can fix the problem using one of the methods below. Before you start troubleshooting, be sure to check your mouse’s cable and connection. Sometimes, following these simple steps can help fix the problem.
Let’s start.
1. Old Mouse Pads
If you’ve been using the same mouse pad for years, it’s likely that some of it has faded and lost its roughness to hold the mouse in place. This may cause your mouse to automatically scroll a little bit and you will see the mouse pointer move on its own. Also, if the mouse pad is washable, you should wash it occasionally so make sure all unwanted dust is removed to keep the mouse pad clean.
2. Control Desk
Many people do not use mousepads and prefer to use the table instead. Some of these desks have drawers and over time they tend to warp and ruin the overall alignment of the spotlight. Therefore, check for any unexpected curvature on the surface of your desk.
3. Update Mouse Firmware
Sometimes the mouse may not work well with Windows 10 updates, especially if you are part of the Windows 10 Insider program. However, you should update your mouse firmware to the latest version. Usually, the bundled software should take care of this, or you can check out the mouse manufacturer’s support or downloads section to check for the latest firmware update.
4. Hardware Troubleshooter
As the name suggests, the built-in troubleshooter in Windows will help you fix the problem and suggest software fixes if you accidentally messed up the settings.
Stage 1: Search for Command Prompt in Windows Search (Windows key+S) and open it with administrator rights (click Run as administrator).
Step 2: Type the following command and press Enter.
msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
Stage 3: This will launch a popup. Click Next to continue and let it run.
5. Check Drivers
You should check if your Windows 10 computer has the latest drivers for your peripherals, including the mouse. Follow our guide to updating, reinstalling and rolling back drivers as a way to troubleshoot mouse cursor malfunctioning issues.
6. Virus and Malware Scan
If you suspect that some malware or hidden application is taking control of your mouse, run Microsoft Defender to scan your computer. We also recommend that Malwarebytes remove any malware that evades the notification.
7. Disable Other Accessories
If you are using game controllers, graphics tablets, joysticks, or other input device connected to the system. The problem is that some of them can also control the mouse, which causes a conflict. Disable all such controllers and input devices and remove them from your computer and check again.
8. Disable Realtek HD Audio Manager
Realtek HD Audio Manager drivers are known to cause conflict with mouse drivers. Try reinstalling and updating Realtek HD Audio Manager, but if that doesn’t work, another way to fix this problem is to disable Realtek from starting on reboot.
Stage 1: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
Step 2: Under the Startup tab, right-click on Realtek Audio Manager (the name may vary slightly) and select Disable.
9. Change Touchpad Delay
If you have set the touchpad sensitivity too high on your laptop, it will respond to the slightest touch. To control this, you can adjust the touchpad sensitivity on your Windows 10 laptop.
Stage 1: Press Windows key+I to open Settings as before and search for and open Touchpad settings.
Step 2: Swipe a little and change the TouchPad sensitivity to Low, Medium, High or Most sensitive.
10. Disable Touchpad
Sometimes dirt can build up on the touchpad surface and malfunction. If you prefer to use a mouse with your laptop, you should disable the touchpad.
Stage 1: Press Windows key+I to open Settings and search for ‘Turn touchpad on or off’. Click the search result to open it.
Step 2: Click the toggle button to turn it off. Some laptop keyboards also have a special key to quickly toggle the touchpad on/off.

It can be scary to see your mouse move on its own without touching the mouse or touchpad. Fortunately, there are many ways to detect what is wrong and fix it.
