Do you have a habit of leaving your cell phone plugged in all night? Most people have this habit, but not everyone knows the risks it poses.

Leaving your smartphone plugged in all night ends up being a very common situation because most people, in their busy routines, need the device to be brand new the next day to perform several of their routine functions, such as waking up with the help of the alarm clock.

Even so, many people still wonder whether it is right to leave a cell phone plugged in for so long. And what’s more: could this cause a sudden explosion at any moment?

Taking these points into consideration, David MacKay, a professor at the University of Cambridge in England, conducted research on the subject that can answer most questions related to the topic.

Can I leave my cell phone plugged in all night?

Apart from the fear that the device will explode and other concerns, such as how much energy it consumes when it stays plugged in all night, David MacKay studied all these details that many people miss, and discovered everything that we will explain below.

According to him, when the device is connected to the socket and remains that way for an entire night, consumption is higher, but not enough to generate a huge increase in the energy bill.

After the cell phone reaches 100% and remains plugged in, it consumes approximately 2.4 W, which is equivalent to R$14 annually (or, in dollars, the equivalent of US$5.3).

However, if a considerable number of people live in your home, this multiplied value can indeed make a big difference when it comes to paying your energy bill.

And as for the risk of explosion, is this risk real when the cell phone is kept plugged in? The professor says that there are exceptions, but the possibilities are minimal.

This is because modern devices stop counting energy, that is, they cut off the electricity after the cell phone reaches its maximum charge. So, although this habit affects the battery’s life cycle a little, it will not be enough to limit the cell phone’s lifespan with you.
