The young teenager, who lives in Lisronagh, Ireland, was hospitalized for three days after some gardening activities. Jayden Channon came into contact with a plant whose risks he was unaware of.

After a serious reaction, Channon had to be taken to the hospital to contain the progression of the symptoms.

Originating from the Caucasus and Central Asia, this perennial plant can reach impressive heights, reaching 2 to 5 meters in height. Its leaves are large and jagged, while its flowers white ones form large umbels.

A striking feature of the Heracleum mantegazzianum Its robust, hairy stem contains a photosensitizing sap that is dangerous to human skin.

The main concern related to Heracleum mantegazzianum refers to its photosensitizing chemicals, such as furanocoumarin. When the plant comes into contact with the skin and is exposed to sunlight, it can cause severe burns, blisters, and rashes known as phytodermatitis.

This reaction is known as contact photodermatitis and can be extremely painful and long-lasting, taking weeks to heal completely.

If there is accidental contact with the plant, it is necessary to immediately wash the affected area with soap and water, protecting it from sun exposure for a period of 48 to 72 hours.

Due to the dangers associated with Heracleum mantegazzianummany countries and local authorities have implemented measures to control and eradicate this plant invasive.

Jayden’s grandmother, Mrs Annemarie Channon, told The Daily Mail she believes her grandson suffered second and third degree burns.

The youngster received the necessary care from the medical team at Tipperary University Hospital. However, Jayden will still have to undergo treatment for his burns for a few years.
