Solar System may host new planet discovered by Brazilian

New research suggests that the Solar system it may harbor one more planet in addition to the known ones.

Researcher Patryk Sofia Lykawka, currently a professor at Kindai University in Japan and graduated from the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos), in Rio Grande do Sul, suggests the presence of an additional planet located more than 200 astronomical units from the Sun, equivalent to the distance between Earth and our star.

Analysis of the orbits of trans-Neptunian objects

Lykawka analyzed the orbits of different groups of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), located in the distant Kuiper Belt.

When investigating these stars, he discovered that some of them had orbits beyond the gravitational effects of Neptune, while others had an orbital inclination of 45°. Furthermore, a third group had objects with peculiar orbits.

In turn, the scientist carried out simulations of the external Solar System, which included a possible planet with a mass similar to Earth, in varying orbits.

“I obtained results that could explain the orbital properties of distant Kuiper Belt populations,” explains Lykawka. “This suggests a vital role played by the new planet in the formation of the Kuiper Belt,” she explains.

The prediction of a new planet

Patryk realized, with new simulations, that the outer Solar System could not explain the properties of the objects in question.

“Thus, this study predicts the existence of a planet with a mass of approximately 1.5 to 3 Earths in the distant outer Solar System, located beyond 200 astronomical units,” he said.

He suggested three possible orbits for this hypothetical world, all ranging from 200 to 800 astronomical units.

According to the professor’s analysis, the most promising results highlight orbits located between 200 and 500 astronomical units, as well as those between 200 and 800 astronomical units.

Implications of the discovery of a new planet

If the discovery of this star is confirmed, the Solar System could once again have nine planets.

“Furthermore, just as happened in 2006 with the reclassification of Pluto, we would need to improve the definition of ‘planet’, as a massive planet located far beyond Neptune would probably belong to a new class”, reflects Patryk.

For the next steps of his study, the professor plans to reevaluate the results with new simulations and extensions of the research.
