Will artificial intelligence (AI) take over the world? This question is one of the most prominent lately, given the improvements in AI around the world.
Although there is widespread fear regarding AI, especially due to dystopian science fiction films such as “The Matrix”, it is important to highlight that this new tool has had very positive impacts in several aspects.
Artificial intelligence allows us to access quick and accessible answers and helps to expand knowledge.
In this context, the first AI that generates texts in Portuguese on any topic was recently launched.
Meet Albertina, an AI that generates texts in Portuguese
This new AI was named Albertina by researchers from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).
Albertina was launched on May 15th, and since then there have been 33 downloads. However, this is only the first module of the AI.
The project is expected to be completed in July with a second module known as GPT-PT, which will be made available for free. Albertina’s development was based on OpenAI’s GPTs, such as GPT 3.5 and, more recently, GPT 4.
In this sense, projects within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Program (RRP) received around 35 million euros, financed by the Accelerate.AI consortium.
The main goal of Accelerate.AI is to develop an encoder and decoder. Albertina acts as the encoder, while GPT-PT will be the decoder.
Both have the ability to perform the same tasks. However, Albertina requires more intense and specialized training in different topics.
In this way, Albertina requires more training because its neural network has a smaller dimension. GPT-PT has a more complex neural network, which facilitates faster learning, as well as faster data generation.
