Internet in Brazil: almost 80% of households in Brazil have internet access

Since the expansion of the Internet in Brazil in the early 2000s, we have never had such a large number of users. Thus, the World Wide Web is already part of the daily lives of most Brazilians, and the trend is set to increase.

Just like telephone lines, the internet is increasingly widespread throughout the country. Therefore, a recent survey by the Brazilian Information and Coordination Center (NIC.Br) found that 80% of Brazilian homes have access to the internet.

As a result, the TIC Domicílio survey revealed that in 2022 there was an increase of more than 50% in households connected to the internet. As expected, the connection is higher in urban areas. However, rural areas are not exempt from this trend.

In fact, the data collected reveals that 82% of homes in urban areas have an internet connection. In rural areas, the data is for 68% of homes. This indicates the success of the digital inclusion programs that began in the late 1990s.

Which region is the most connected?

The same survey revealed another very interesting fact: the percentage of homes connected to the internet in each region of Brazil. The region that tops the list is the Central-West, with 83% of homes having access to the internet.

Next come the Southeast, with 82%; South, with 81%; Northeast, with 78%; and North, with 76%. The numbers reveal a wide spread of the network, with all regions presenting around 8 in 10 connected homes.

What is the most used way to connect?

Among the many ways to connect to the internet today, the main method chosen by Brazilians is fiber optics. Other technologies that appear frequently are cable connections and mobile networks, such as 3G and 4G.

Although the data indicates a positive scenario in the country, there is still a lot of social inequality that directly affects the distribution of the network. The places with the least access to the internet were the most remote and had the lowest development rates.
