Far beyond science: Stephen Hawking’s cultural legacy transcends barriers

Stephen Hawking is a great reference when it comes to overcoming challenges. Even with the restriction of movement caused by a degenerative disease, he applied all his creativity and intelligence to produce innovations in science, in addition to collaborating with the pop culture.

Hawking had great achievements in science and culture

Born in Oxford, England, in 1942, Stephen had a life full of great achievements not only in science, but also in culture. Discover some of his most notable contributions in the cultural sphere:

  • He inspired the documentary “A Brief History of Time” in 1991, through his book of the same name.
  • He narrated the 2013 film “Hawking”, which tells his story.
  • The Oscar-winning film “The Theory of Everything” was also inspired by Stephen’s life. The film won Eddie Redmayne the Oscar for Best Actor.
  • Together with his daughter Lucy, he wrote a children’s book entitled “George and the Secret of the Universe”
  • The physicist participated in a special episode of the highly successful series “The Big Bang Theory”.
  • He also appeared on “Star Trek.” At the time, he was a hologram and appeared alongside Newton and Einstein.
  • In music, he participated in the recording of the song “Keep Talking”, from the album “The Division Bell”, by the band Pink Floyd.
  • Stephen Hawking attended the opening of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, reading a speech.
  • Some animations have represented the scientist, such as “The Simpsons”, “Futurama”, “Dexter’s Laboratory”, “The Fairly OddParents” and “Family Guy”.
  • Also with his daughter Lucy, he wrote other children’s stories, such as “George and the Cosmic Treasure Hunt”, “George and the Big Bang”, “George and the Unbreakable Code” and “George the Blue Moon”.
  • His experience at Cambridge University was documented on film in 2004 under the direction of Philip Martin.
