‘Brick’: learn more about the FIRST cell phone to make a call in the 1970s

Last Monday (3), fifty years passed since the first official call from a mobile phone. Named DynaTAC 8000X, the device made the first transmission.

But if you’re complaining about the large smartphones you might have, let’s change your mind right now. That’s because this historic device weighed about 1.4 kilos. It must have been awful to make a call on it.

So today, we’re going to talk about the DynaTAC 8000X, which was part of a completely historic moment. Check out some details and curiosities about this device right now.

Which device made the first cell phone call?

Called the DynaTAC 8000X, it was a Motorola device and was responsible for making the first call from a cell phone, on April 3, 1973. The precursor of this incredible movement was Martin Cooper, an engineer who worked at Motorola and earned the nickname “father of the cell phone”.

Before this big step, the cell phone had to be kept in the car, because there was a whole bunch of equipment to make it work. So when Cooper made his first call, he called an AT&T operator to say that he was able to complete the call without the need for an operator on both ends.

Despite its great feat, the DynaTAC 8000X was only commercially available ten years after Martin Cooper made the call. It went from 13 kg to 1.1 kg and did not rely on the car battery to operate. It had its own battery source and could maintain a call for up to thirty minutes.

To fully charge, the cell phone needed to be plugged in for ten hours. This was a long time, considering that today there are devices that charge in a maximum of one hour. Another interesting point is that the cell phone could only store thirty phone numbers in its memory.

In the end, the phone only lasted thirty minutes of conversation and the entire device was 33 centimeters long. To give you an idea, the largest iPad available for sale is 12.5 centimeters long. In addition, in its adaptation, the DynaTAC 8000X gained a small screen so that the user could see the number they were dialing.
