Comments on a YouTube video are helpful for viewers and creators alike. Sometimes I quickly skim through a video’s comments to get extra information or to determine upfront whether the content is worth my time. However, there are times when comments to videos fail to load, especially in Chrome. If that describes your current situation, refer to the troubleshooting checks in this guide to fix this issue.
Before tweaking the browser, check if the video actually supports comments. Hate speech, violence, etc. YouTube sometimes disables comments on certain videos for the sake of moderation. Also, comments may not be available on videos where creators have restricted viewers from commenting. If the issue only affects a particular video, the above-mentioned restrictions may apply. To confirm this, open the video in another browser.
If YouTube comments are loading correctly for all videos in other browsers then there is definitely something wrong with Chrome. Try closing the video tab or opening the video in a new Chrome tab. You should also close and reopen the browser. This may help.
1. Clear Data of Chrome
The accumulation of browsing data (cached images and files, cookies, browsing history, etc.) in your PC’s local storage sometimes leads to permanent anomalies when browsing the internet. Clearing Chrome’s browsing data can help fix issues that prevent YouTube comments from loading.
Stage 1: Tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner of the browser (next to the address bar) and select Settings.
Alternatively, type chrome://settings into the address bar and press Enter/Return on your keyboard.
Step 2: Go to the ‘Privacy and security’ section and select ‘Clear browsing data’.
Stage 3: Click the Time range dropdown button and choose whether you want to clear the browser’s data for the last 24 hours, 7 days, 4 weeks or All Time.
We recommend clearing the data generated by the browser in the last 24 hours. If you still can’t view YouTube comments, repeat steps 1 to 3 and select other time slots.
Step 4: Check all browsing data options and tap on Clear data button.
Reload the YouTube video and check if the comments are loaded.
2. Reset Chrome
By resetting Chrome, you are restoring the browser’s settings to their factory defaults. This is an effective troubleshooting solution for various glitches affecting the browser’s functions and the performance of some websites. If you still cannot access YouTube comments after clearing browsing data, follow the steps below to reset Google Chrome settings.
Note: Resetting Chrome’s data will clear the browser’s temporary data and disable all extensions. Other data (saved passwords, bookmarks, history, etc.) will not be deleted.
Stage 1: Scroll to the bottom of the Settings menu and tap the Advanced drop-down button.
Step 2: Then click ‘Restore settings to their original defaults’.
Stage 3: Tap Reset settings at the prompt to continue.
3. Disable Proxy on Your Computer
Using a proxy server on your PC can mess up comments for YouTube videos and cause other connection problems in Chrome. If your computer is using a proxy connection, disable the proxy and check if that fixes the problem.
Stage 1: Launch the Chrome settings menu and tap the Advanced drop-down button.
Step 2: Click ‘Open your computer’s proxy settings’ option.
This will take you to your computer’s network settings page where you can disable any active proxy connections.
4. Disable ad blocker
You may also face difficulties navigating some websites in Chrome if the extensions installed in the browser are broken or broken. Some users disabled an ad-blocking extension to get YouTube comments to work again. Ad blockers are notorious for causing website crash, especially in Chrome.
If your browser has an Ad-blocker or similar extension installed, disable it and reinstall YouTube.
Login chrome://extensions in the address bar and turn off Ad blocker (or similar extensions).
5. Try Incognito Mode
If you don’t have an Ad-blocker installed or don’t know the exact extension responsible for blocking YouTube comments, try uploading the video in Incognito mode.
To open an Incognito tab in Chrome, tap the menu icon and select ‘New Incognito Window’.
Quick Shortcut: Use ‘Control + Shift + N’ (for Windows) or ‘Command + Shift + N’ (for Mac) to quickly launch an Incognito tab in Chrome.
If YouTube comments load fine in Incognito mode, this is an indication that the problem is caused by a corrupted extension. To fix this issue permanently, you need to unmount and remove the problematic extension.
Tap the Chrome menu button, go to More Tools > Extensions and disable extensions one by one.
6. Update Chrome
Finally, check if your browser is up to date. To update Chrome on your computer, type chrome://settings/help into the address bar and press Enter. The browser will automatically check for updates and prompt you to download any available version of Chrome. Make sure to complete the update by restarting the browser. Otherwise, this issue may persist even after downloading the updated version on your device.
