Many believe teammate Islam Makhachev will soon overtake Dagestan as the greatest lightweight athlete of all time. It was Khabib’s father’s longtime dream to get two of his best students to become UFC champions.
Since Nurmagomedov’s retirement in 2020, it was only a matter of time before Makhachev became the world’s top lightweight athlete. And at UFC 280 last month, Makhachev dominantly dethroned Charles Oliveira to become the best lightweight in the UFC. The former lightweight champion helps Makhachev train to become the champion and fulfill his father’s plan.

Makhachev also thanked Khabib’s father for his success. The new lightweight champion is Abdulmanap’s favorite student, and he wants to do everything he can to not tarnish his mentor’s legacy.
