A few days ago, Fiona Ferro shocked the tennis community when she revealed that she had been sexually assaulted and allegedly raped by her former trainer Pierre Bouteyre. Since then, all the major tennis organizations have expanded their support for him and launched an investigation into the matter.
This incident sparked a great debate among other players about the safety of female tennis players. Many contemporary actors stood up for Ferro and spoke about the challenges women face. Following her fourth round win at the US Open, #1 American Jessica Pegula highlighted how the WTA Players Council, led by Victoria Azarenka, has always worked to keep young players safe.
The Players Council is a body that advocates for anything in the interest of the players. Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens, Donna Vekic, Johanna Konta, Kristina MladenovicMagda Linette, Gabriela Dabrowski and Christina McHale.
Pegula said the player council wants to protect everyone as much as possible and with Azarenka, who has a lot of experience in the tour, the council is working properly.
“Obviously we represent the players and we want to protect everyone as much as possible. I think it’s someone like Vika. [Azarenka] “Someone who has a lot of experience and has been on tour for such a long time, when they see something that isn’t right or strange behavior or something like that, maybe they can definitely confirm that.” said.
“I think in terms of the players council, we just want to emphasize that and highlight which situations are not true, has someone talked to this girl, this coach? Does someone want to explain X, Y, Z or why the situation looks so weird? I heard from a few girls that this happened.” she loved it.

Jessica Pegula on how things are starting to get better for young actors now
Pegula also said that things are much better for actresses than they were 20 years ago because they now have more ways to talk about injustice.
“I think it’s a lot easier to shed light on that these days than it was 20 years ago when things weren’t so talked about and open.. I think about very little things doing this. We’re very hopeful about that on the players council and I think having experienced players, I think we’re all a little bit older so, I think, we have a protective mindset like seeing all the young girls come out and want to make sure they’re best protected“said.
