“We are the backbone of the country” Serena Williams on the role of Black women in the development of the United States after receiving the Portrait of the Nation award

Old World Number 1 Serena Williams One of the most inspiring players the sport has ever seen. She became one of the flag bearers in popularizing women’s tennis and left her legacy behind, paving the way for many aspiring players. After her incredible journey in professional tennis, she was awarded special commendation in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery for being a true champion of the sport.

With a total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 14 doubles majors, Serena is truly a champion of the game, with numerous other accolades and achievements as the list goes on. He was ranked World No. 1 for a record time of 319 weeks, while finishing the year-end #1 on five occasions. One of the few Black Americans to have their names engraved on the highest stage.

Janai Nelson, a prominent American lawyer and Chairman of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, shared some looks from the prestigious ceremony as she opened her dazzle section and looked enchanted in a violet-hued glittering gown. She congratulated Serena on receiving the Nation Portrait award for her outstanding contribution as a black woman and shared some valuable insights from the retired American legend’s acceptance speech.

While receiving the award, Serena Williams said, “It’s important to see smiling Black women in the National Portrait Gallery. Black women are serious, but we have our joy too. We are the backbone of this country”. Serena, as well as her sister Venus, were recognized for the newly commissioned larger-than-life portraits at the same exhibition.

His contribution to the sport needs no introduction, as he was nominated for the “Game Changer of 2022” category at the People’s Choice Awards. The former 7-time Australian Open champion has been a constant name on the nominee list for the last five years in a row. Serena Williams also recognized the 2018 Game Changer category winner for her exemplary contributions to the sport.
