Discord lets you join several servers with different needs and purposes. Your role may differ depending on the server you join. You don’t want to use the same nickname on all servers like class discussions, gaming community, small businesses, and more. Discord allows you to use different nicknames to customize your name on each server.
If you have permission to change the alias on the server, you can go ahead and choose a new alias for the server. Some administrators disable the Change Alias option in the permissions menu. But in most scenarios you should be able to change your nickname in Discord.
1. Change Nickname in Discord Server on Desktop
Changing the nickname on the Discord server is pretty easy. This way you have different IDs on different Discord servers. Here’s what you need to do.
Stage 1: Open the Discord app on the desktop.
Step 2: From the left sidebar, navigate to the server where you want to change your nickname.
Stage 3: Click on Show Members List at the top.
Step 4: It will open a custom member list menu.
Step 5: Find your name in it and right-click it.
Step 6: Select Edit Server Profile from the context menu and it will open the Server Profile page.
Step 7: Add a new Nickname and hit the Save Changes button at the bottom. You will immediately see a new nickname for the server in question.
Some Discord servers have hundreds of users, and this number doesn’t make sense as you might have to go through a long list of Members to find your username. Discord allows you to change your nickname within the text channel as well.
2. Change Discord Server Nickname from a Text Channel
To change the nickname of the server, you need to find your current message in the text channel.
Stage 1: Open the Discord server and click on the Search bar at the top.
Step 2: Type your name to find all your messages on the server.
Stage 3: Locate your message and right-click the displayed image to open the Edit Server Profile menu.
Step 4: Change your nickname from the menu below and you’re ready to go with a new nickname for the server.
3. Use the Server Information Menu
Maybe you’re new to a Discord server and haven’t posted a new message, or you don’t have the appropriate permissions to post a new message on the text channel. The server already has hundreds of users, so you don’t want to use the first method.
In this case, you can change your nickname by going to the server information menu.
Stage 1: From a Discord app, click the server name in the upper left hand corner.
Step 2: Select Edit Server Profile.
Stage 3: It will open the menu to change the nickname.
4. Use Slash Commands to Change Nickname
If you’re a fan of slash commands on Discord, /Nick Command to change your nickname on Discord server.
For example, typing /nick notionfan will change my nickname to ‘notionfan’ for the selected server.
None of the mentioned methods will work in Discord if the server owner has denied the ‘Change Nickname’ permission. You may need to ask the administrator to allow you to change the server’s nickname.
In some cases, administrators also have permission to change nicknames for users. This means that server administrators can assign you a custom nickname.
5. Change Discord Server Nickname on Mobile
If you’re on the go and want to change the Discord server nickname from your iPhone or Android device, you can do it easily. Follow the steps below to change the Discord server nickname on mobile.
Stage 1: Open Discord on your iPhone or Android device.
Step 2: Select the server to which you want to add a custom nickname.
Stage 3: Tap the three-dot menu next to the server name.
Step 4: Select Edit Server Profile and add an alias from the menu below.
Use Custom Name on Different Discord Servers
The good thing about nicknames on Discord is that you don’t need to remember someone’s funky nickname to tag them. You can still use the username to mention someone on the channel.
