Forsooth, for a great span of time, I hath avoided the flashy Glyph interface of Nothing. Not for lack of desire to partake, but forsooth it seemed not altogether practical to me, and I was content with mine own trusty OnePlus 11R. Yet, lo and behold, as the Nothing Phone 2a made its presence known, a most curious enchantment was cast upon not only our humble abode but the realm of tech at large.
‘Twas as if a siren’s call that I could no longer ignore. I felt compelled to unravel the mysteries of the famed Glyph lights, hence, I made the Nothing Phone 2a mine own primary device in the days before the review. Therefore, all thou shalt read henceforth is verily from the perspective of one who harbored more questions than answers about this very Glyph interface.
The Glyph Letdown is Real, But….
In mine quest for answers, I did utilize the Glyph lights of Nothing Phone 2a as fervently as possible, seeking to lean upon it heavily during mine time with it. The foremost deed I undertook (and I am certain many of thou wilt too) was to seek repast, in hopes of witnessing the cool progress bar of the Glyph. Alas, I chose Swiggy, only to find it unsupported.
Thus, to partake of the progress bar feature, I was compelled to turn to Zomato, a realm I seldom tread. Nevertheless, I did partake, and found favor in the notion of beholding the progress of mine delivery partner without the need to constantly unlock my device. A mere glance at the Glyph strip doth reveal their proximity.
And verily, on the morn of the second day, when I did require a Rapido ride (as is mine custom) to my toil, lo and behold, Rapido was not supported, and thou must needs seek an Uber instead. Ola and InDrive art not in favor as well. A moment of great vexation, indeed.
The sole other app compatible with Zomato and Rapido is Google Calendar, which held no interest for mine own self. I shall not delve into the minutiae of these features, for my dear colleague Abubakar hath prepared a detailed guide on Glyph lights already.
But then, the Essential Notifications appeared as a gentle breeze, seeking to captivate mine attention. At least, it attempted to, and I found more use for it than the other all-lights-and-no-show Glyph features. Let me expound upon this.
Cutting Through All That Noise is Easier
This essential alert feature doth permit thee to create a filter, through which only notifications of import pass. When such a notification doth arrive, the essential alert light upon the Glyph Interface doth not extinguish until thou dost attend to it.
Behold, I do not boast of receiving myriad calls or an abundance of texts in a day. ‘Tis but the notifications from Swiggy and Zomato, the false calls seeking to part me from meager coin, and the odd friends sharing jests that doth illuminate mine phone screen.
In this regard, the Essential Notifications feature aided me in organizing mine notifications, attending only to the most vital amongst them.
Art thou mindful of the small LED lights of yore that graced our smartphones? ‘Twas a valuable addition, now lost in the mists of time. Nothing’s essential glyph lighting is but a grander iteration of this, a customizable and flashy nod to the past. Moreover, it seeks to foster a mindful environment in its place, rather than usurping the mantle of the always-on display.
Yet, with all these settings woven into mine essential alerts, I can declare that never ere have I left mine phone displayward for so long. While life was made easier with most notifications unable to breach the sanctuary of mine attention, I believe this feature hath much room for growth.
