Design: small, large or very large notch?
The design of the 3 smartphones is very different, including the front. Admittedly, all 3 have a notch, but none of them are in the same boat. The OnePlus 6T has a “waterdrop” notch, meaning it’s been minimized to show only the bare minimum, namely the front sensor. While this is worth noting the presence of a chin (bottom border), even if it is small, it allows it to benefit from a very original style and a better rimless design. Glass and metal shell is the most beautiful effect.
Unlike the OnePlus 6T, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a large notch that drastically reduces the display area for notifications. The user experience level is pretty average. For the rest, the curved edges are reminiscent of the lines of Samsung’s S or Note series. Triple photo sensors arranged in a square shape add to its very elegant design.
The Pixel 3 XL side has a notch that literally dives into the display, almost exaggeratedly. The web also had a lot of fun during the first leaks that reminded of this fact. For the rest, the rear reveals two different surfaces, it’s easy to distinguish the top and bottom. Pixel 3 has a single photo sensor with its own look and identity. We tend to prefer the OnePlus 6T, but have a strong hesitation against the Mate 20 Pro.
Screen
The 3 screens are OLED and provide excellent performance from every angle. It is difficult, if not impossible, to decide between them on this issue. The Mate 20 Pro’s screen is curved and the panel displays 3120 x 1440 pixels for a size close to 6.4″ like the OnePlus 6T and Pixel 3 XL (6.3″). In all 3 cases, blacks and contrasts are deep and controlled.
No matter which smartphone consumers choose, they will be sure to have the very best in technology. Special mention can be made for the Pixel 3 XL, which according to Displaymate has the best smartphone display on the market. We can’t find a winner on this basis, basically 3 smartphones are equal.
Performance: Snapdragon 845 and Kirin 980
The Snapdragon 845 makes its heart beat on its two flagships, the OnePlus 6T and Pixel 3 XL. This is the SoC of the moment as it has most high-end devices released in 2018. The performance is clearly there regardless of tasks that require viewing 3D games, apps, social networks, streaming videos. In short, everything you can do on a smartphone works flawlessly without any hitches.
The Kirin 980 embedded in the Mate 20 Pro is a next-generation SoC etched at 7 nm. It has a smaller footprint, is more powerful and uses less energy. Our Mate 20 Pro review highlights all the capabilities the device is capable of. Benchmarking in support, although this point is not representative of user experience.
Autonomy
In this area, the Mate 20 Pro can count on its impressive 4200 mAh battery and multiple software optimizations with the support of its NPU (neural coprocessor) dedicated to artificial intelligence. This allows him to benefit from better energy management until he learns your habits in terms of using the various apps you use every day. Not to mention that it is compatible with wireless charging and can even charge other devices thanks to it. to “reverse” wireless charging.
Pixel 3 XL has a lower capacity battery of 3430mAh. Its lighter interface is a definite asset, as it has less of an impact on users’ tastes than if it had a bulky overlay. However, there is a terrible gap in battery capacity compared to the Mate 20 Pro. Google’s flagship is therefore not a champion of autonomy.
When we read the technical data sheet of the OnePlus 6T, we see that the flagship has a 3700 mAh battery and the manufacturer’s very efficient in-house fast charging. The OnePlus OxygenOS skin is very lightweight and perfectly optimized. However, Huawei is the biggest champion of this comparison on autonomy.
Camera: single, dual or triple sensor?
Photography is a very important field for the vast majority of consumers, and smartphone manufacturers have understood this well. Huawei has an ultra-efficient triple photo sensor in all conditions in the Mate 20 Pro. And once again, its original camera has an undeniable presence to optimize the quality of footage obtained with AI. Indeed, the photo app makes use of scene recognition, optimizations are automatic depending on the subject to be photographed. Huawei is clearly a master at this.
The Pixel 3 XL has only one main photo sensor and ranks against the proliferating current trends. That doesn’t stop Google from offering one of the best photo phones of the moment, as our Pixel 3 XL test showed. Portrait mode is excellent and the photos taken are very precise and rich in colour, whatever the conditions.
Our OnePlus 6T test bears witness to this, it’s also a good student in terms of photography. The flagship has a dual main photo sensor of 16 + 20 MP. We appreciated the variety of shots this device took, even though it lagged behind its two comrades at some points in our opinion. Mate 20 Pro will undoubtedly make our choice again, but we are also hesitant about the Pixel 3 XL. Probably a proximity issue.
Price
The Mate 20 Pro and Pixel 3 XL cost 999 and 959 euros, respectively, compared to the OnePlus 6T, which is available for pre-order starting at 559 euros. From this point of view, we tend to prefer the OnePlus flagship, which benefits from the quality-price ratio among the 3 smartphones in this comparison.
Solution
Three smartphones compared, 3 completely different universes. The Mate 20 Pro benefits from many benefits and innovative technology, wired, wireless and reverse fast charging, triple photo sensor and superior performance, making it clearly one of the best smartphones of the moment. The Pixel 3 XL differentiates itself with Google’s fast update support and a pure experience from the operating system to the green robot, but…
The newly launched OnePlus 6T is ruining the day with a lightweight interface and strong software tracking from the manufacturer. The last two years have proven that to us. But what makes the OnePlus smartphone attractive is value for money; Consumers are confident that they have the best technology at a price that remains “affordable” considering the prowess of this smartphone.
