Smartphone cameras, though improved over the years, still fall short of the detailed, rich close-up photos produced by DSLR cameras. However, at MWC 2025, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Realme unveiled a groundbreaking device that blurs the lines between these categories – a new smartphone with interchangeable lens.
Interchangeable Lens for a True “Ultra” Camera Experience
The spotlight at MWC was captured by Realme’s Interchangeable Lens prototype, which many anticipated to be named the Realme “Ultra”. Featuring a 1-inch CMOS Sony IMX 989 sensor at the back, this device allows users to attach a full-fledged camera lens to the phone, creating a unique photography experience.
This innovation is made possible by the interchangeable lens system surrounding the camera island, enabling users to use mirrorless camera lenses from brands like Leica and Canon. With options like a 73mm portrait lens and a 234mm 10x telephoto lens, users can achieve true optical zoom without any artificial intelligence interference in the final results.
Realme has also equipped the device with primary and ultrawide camera lenses, enhancing the overall versatility of the smartphone’s photography capabilities.
According to Realme, the Ultra smartphone can redefine mobile imaging, offering users the opportunity to capture sharp, lossless photos with a natural bokeh effect reminiscent of traditional DSLR cameras.
A Bold Prototype That May Never Hit Store Shelves
While the prospect of experiencing such camera superiority firsthand may be enticing, the Realme device showcased at MWC is merely a prototype and may never see a commercial release. Although the device promises a unique photography experience, its availability to consumers remains uncertain.
Despite the potential limitations on its commercial availability, the Realme Ultra concept phone represents a step towards pushing the boundaries of mobile photography, offering users a glimpse into the future of smartphone imaging technology.
