Apple has just unveiled the iPhone SE, a 4-inch smartphone that embodies some of the iPhone 6S specs but in a smaller format and positions itself in another niche. What’s up against two big names like the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5?

Apple A9 and Snapdragon 820
Despite being positioned as Apple’s entry-level now, the iPhone SE is equipped with an Apple A9 chip. An ultra-powerful processor that outperformed everyone in 2015. But what about 2016 now that Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon 820 found in the LG G5 and the American Galaxy S7?
If we rely on the latest AnTuTu ranking, it is the Snapdragon 820 processor that holds the prize on both sides. More CPU performance than graphics. The Apple A9 is second in both rankings, while the European Galaxy S7’s Exynos 8890 is in third place.
On the CPU side, all three have excellent scores ranging from . 129,865 to 136,383 points. The gap between these three chips is quite small compared to the others in the lineup. On the CPU side, the Snapdragon 820 is clearly dominant and lags behind its two rivals, but in reality, the three offer excellent scores and the games currently offered on mobile are not as advanced as the user might feel, no matter how greedy they are. difference.
We’re not going to reclaim the amount of RAM on the iPhone SE that seems to be obsolete but is actually more than enough to run iOS.
A compact top of the series
While the iPhone 6 and 6S are based on a minimum format of 4.7 inches, iPhone SE returns to 4-inch format from previous generations. It’s a high-end small format that combines the same Apple A9 processor with its two big brothers and can therefore deliver top-notch performance. Finally a model that can be compared to its only real Android competitor, the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact.
On the one hand, this could also be an advantage, as with this new iPhone Apple is offering a partnership that remains extremely rare in a market dominated by 5-inch smartphones and phablets.
Who dominates the photo part?
The iPhone SE offers the same 12-megapixel photo sensor as these two models introduced last September. Includes 4K video capture and dual-tone flash. A sensor that stays very good without being perfect as it has been classified by DxOMark Below most of the Android competitors with 82 points. At this level, it will have a hard time competing with its two rivals, and especially the Galaxy S7.
LG G5 offers dual 16 + 8 megapixel photo sensors that allow you to take 135 degree wide-angle photos. The features offered are nice and innovative but there doesn’t seem to be any improvement in quality compared to the LG G4.
Finally, the Samsung Galaxy S7 stands out as the new king of photography. The 12-megapixel photo sensor uses Dual Pixel technology borrowed from reflex cameras, and its f/1.7 aperture captures 95% more light than that of the Galaxy S6, allowing it to focus on 100% of the photo sites. Currently, it remains unbeatable.
Solution
Apple is not targeting the same category of users with the iPhone SE as the 6S, just look at the price, 489 Euros in 16GB version. Still expensive but not for an Apple product! Therefore, above all, it is a model designed for iPhone 5S users who want to change their phone but find the iPhone 6S too big, or for those who want to change phones. Enter the world of iOS at the lowest priceIt could enable Apple to increase its market share.
The presentation has just ended, it will be necessary to wait for the launch to know if Apple has hit the mark, but the strategy adopted with this new model seems pretty logical.
