How to Manage Multiple Tumblr Posts with the Bulk Post Editor

Tumblr makes blogging super easy. The variety of post types available, combined with the ability to reblog just about anything, makes for an experience like no other. However, when you have tons of posts accumulated over the years, managing them is not that easy. That’s where Tumblr’s lesser-known Bulk Post Editor comes in.

The Bulk Post Editor, or Mega Editor as it is often referred to, gives you the ability to delete multiple posts at once. Not only that, but you can also change the tags of multiple posts at once. Sounds pretty useful, right? But not with its failures and limitations, as you will soon learn.

So, let’s go over the basics of using the Tumblr Bulk Post Editor and learn how it works. But don’t let its softness get you down, because you’ll also learn about a stylish New XKit mini extension. This new extension greatly improves the functionality of Mega Editor.

Accessing the Bulk Post Editor

Installing the Bulk Post Editor is quite difficult if you don’t know how. It’s supposed to be in the control panel, but where exactly? Start by opening the account menu – under your primary blog select Posts.

Then you see the Bulk Post Editor option with a small text on the right side of the dashboard – as if Tumblr doesn’t want you to find it. Click it and you will be taken directly to the Mega Editor.

But wait. How do you get him to start a secondary blog? Looks like there isn’t a blog selector anywhere in the Mega Editor, right? But look at the address bar in your browser. Change the username of your primary blog to that of a secondary blog and then press Enter to load immediately.

An alternative way to get to a secondary blog is to open that blog via the dashboard and then launch the Bulk Post Editor directly. But for quick switching, it is much better to change the username in the address bar.

Functionality and Limitations

Now that you know how to access the Bulk Post Editor, let’s check out how it actually works. As you can see, all posts are organized in thumbnail format, but divided by month to make the task of finding items easier.

You can scroll all the way down to get to your old posts, but you can use the dropdown in the top left corner of the editor to load posts starting from any month of any year.

This functionality is crucial to effective post management with New XKit’s mini-extension filters, as you’ll see later, because only posts loaded on the page at any given time are affected.

Aside from purely text-based posts, thumbnails make it pretty easy to identify other post types – if in doubt, you could always double-click a thumbnail to load the post into a custom tab, but the ability to enlarge them directly in the editor itself would work wonders.

In the upper-right corner of the Bulk Post Editor, you have a set of descriptive options labeled Delete, Edit Tags, Add Tags, and Deselect.

To get rid of unwanted posts, simply click on their thumbnails to select posts. Unfortunately, you can’t drag your cursor to select a bunch at once. There’s also a maximum limit of 100 posts that you can’t exceed at once, which is probably the Bulk Post Editor’s biggest fail.

Click Delete after selecting the thumbnails. Finally, click OK on the confirmation popup to get rid of them.

Other functionality that the Bulk Post Editor offers is allowing you to add or remove tags from multiple posts (up to 100 at a time). It’s pretty handy when it comes to recategorizing old posts.

Just click the ones you want to edit, just like when you delete your posts. The Bulk Post Editor doesn’t offer any way to filter posts by their tags, but this is something easily accomplished with the New XKit plugin. Now wait – you’ll find out soon!

Click the Add Tags button to add tags to the selected posts. Enter the tags you want and click Add Tags to confirm.

You can choose to remove unwanted tags from all selected posts at the same time. Click Remove Tags and then check the boxes next to the tags you want to delete – click Remove Tags to confirm.

Overwhelmingly, that’s all the Audience Post Editor has. But now it’s time to see what you’ve been waiting for – the Mass+ New XKit mini extension that will turn the Mega Editor upside down.

Tumblr’s Mass Post Editor is too barebones. But fortunately, the New XKit with Mass+ mini extension comes to the rescue. If you don’t know yet, New XKit is a dedicated Tumblr plugin with dozens of mini-extensions that greatly improve the basic Tumblr experience.

And in this case, Mass+ adds multiple filtering options that make it super easy to choose specific fonts. Not to mention that you can also filter posts by tags. Sounds great!

If you haven’t installed the add-on yet, start by adding it to Chrome or Firefox.

Next, refresh the Tumblr dashboard and review the New XKit popups that appear on the screen to integrate with Tumblr – nothing complicated there. Once you’re past the pop-ups, click on the New XKit icon in the control panel.

Click Get Extensions in the New XKit admin panel that appears. Under Mass+, search for and click Install; you are ready.

Install the Bulk Post Editor and you’ll notice the difference right away. The top right corner of the screen is now filled with filtering options. Starting with the ability to immediately select 100 posts by clicking Select Top 100, this means you don’t have to click through tons of thumbnails. She is sweet. The Deselect All option also allows you to instantly deselect all selected posts, even if they are posts you have manually selected.

And then the other goodies come – post text, image, video, link, etc. You can filter by genres like, which is great.

Great Tip:

Next to each month, you should also find two separate options named Top 100 This Month and Unselect This Month. The former lets you select the top 100 posts for any given month, while the latter lets you uncheck selected posts for the month with just one click.

As for filtering posts by tags, you need to enable an experimental feature for the Mass+ mini extension. Go back to your Tumblr dashboard, load the XKit admin panel and click Mass+ under My XKit. Check the box next to Enable Search by Tag and then exit the panel.

Refresh the Bulk Post Editor and you should see a new option labeled Search by Tags.

Click it and you can filter posts by any tags you add, then easily choose to delete or replace them. And to avoid showing only the last 100 posts, choose a month to set your starting point when filtering repeatedly.

Tumblr hasn’t really made any significant improvements to the Bulk Post Editor since its launch in 2010.
