Galaxy S8 vs LG G6: which one to choose?

The LG G6 was presented at MWC 2017, a month ahead of its biggest competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S8, which was just unveiled at Unpacked 2017. Now that they’re both official, we can make a preliminary comparison of the two monster Koreans!

With a 5.7-inch QHD+ screen from LG and a 5.8-inch WQHD+ panel from Samsung, we can say that the two are almost in the same league. Like the G6 display in particular, the S8 display is expected to offer an 18:9 screen ratio, breaking current market standards, and most smartphones offer a 16:9 display.

Obviously, there is an interest in all this for the two manufacturers: to offer a larger screen surface that is better optimized for multitasking. But the commonalities between the two end there, as these two displays are not simply based on a different technology (IPS for LG, Super AMOLED for Samsung). They also offer a different form factor.

Despite its rounded corners, the LG G6’s screen remains a flat screen, while Samsung offers a curved screen, as it has done with its Edge versions for several years.

Getting all the initial stocks of the latest Snapdragon 835 from Qualcomm, Samsung had no choice but to revert to the previous model Snapdragon 821 if it didn’t want to wait until May or June to launch its smartphone. The Snapdragon 821 remains an excellent chip, and the difference between the two should be felt especially in testing.

The problem, on the other hand, is that LG offers a smartphone equipped with the 2016 chip at the highest price from 2017, as the G6 costs 749 euros. And there, not all consumers may agree. It is annoying, although the price of the S8 is 809 euros. Finally, both phones offer the same amount of RAM, but Samsung offers twice as much storage, i.e. 64GB.

Both LG and Samsung are big names in mobile photography, and this year both offer radically different technologies. Like last year, LG is betting on a dual photo sensor with a wide-angle sensor. All clearly improved as there are now two 13 MP sensors with tons of new features.

The set looks believable and attractive, and there’s no doubt the quality will be there, even if we have to wait for the first tests to confirm all this. For its part, Samsung still opts for a simple sensor this year and recycles the same recipe as last year, namely a 12MP sensor based on Dual Pixel technology, whose excellent quality we already know.

The sensor on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge was one of the best last year and still remains strong in 2017. The sensor has been slightly upgraded this year with new features and a few software optimizations. We were still expecting a little more development on this side.

Design

This year, two manufacturers decided to take a new path by offering bezel-less smartphones. But LG goes further than Samsung because it’s a real gap that separates the G5 from the G6 in terms of design.

We start from a very simple design based on aluminum alloy to a truly premium smartphone that combines a very beautiful metal frame and a glass back, all IP68 certified. The screen-to-size ratio is so well optimized that it allows for the 5.7-inch LG G6 in the 5.3-inch G5 dimensions.

Samsung, for its part, prefers a Galaxy S8 just as much as borderless, or even curved, as the screen gives the illusion of removing the side borders. Additionally, we have the disappearance of the physical Home key in favor of the on-screen navigation buttons, and the fingerprint reader on the back saves additional space. As you can see, both manufacturers seem to have gone almost flawlessly in terms of design.

Autonomy

At this level, it’s hard to make a comparison until the two smartphones have been tested. However, we note that even if we are still below the 3600 mAh of the Galaxy S7 Edge or the 4000 mAh of the Huawei Mate 9, the G6 offers a battery of 3300 mAh, which is significantly higher than last year.

The Galaxy S8, on the other hand, only has a 3000mAh battery, the same capacity as last year, but with a 5.8-inch screen. However, we hope that the 10-nanometer engraving of the Soc Snapdragon 835 (or Exynos 8895, depending on the market) will limit breakage by reducing energy consumption.

Bixby and Dex

Samsung’s other big announcement is about features: The new S8s are equipped with a new AI-powered personal assistant, Bixby. He seems to understand what you’re saying to him much better than any other assistant on the market, including Siri. In this respect, it gives you much more voice control over apps on your smartphone, for example.

The other feature that hits the brand is DeX: an accessory that lets you connect the Galaxy S8 to a big screen, keyboard and mouse and really take advantage of the power contained in this glass and metal envelope. . This is demonstrated with the Office office suite. We see very well that the pros love it.

Price

We told you, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is not cheap: it retails for 809 euros and 909 euros for the Plus version. The French price of the LG G6 is 749 euros, which is still a hundred euros savings.

So which of the two should you choose?
