A recent study shows that despite Apple’s dominance in the business world, the trend has reversed and Apple’s losing numbers are benefiting Android.
The decline of BlackBerry and the emergence of personal devices used in the professional world completely changed the smartphone market for businesses. Apple reacted too quickly, picking up where BlackBerry left offbut new data shows that dominance is waning in favor of Android, just as Apple has done in the public smartphone market.
The data comes from Good Technology, a company that tracks phone activations and more at more than 5,000 customers worldwide. According to the last semi-annual report, Apple’s OS still holds 67% of device activations in Q2 2014. That’s enough to speak of great dominance in Android, which can count on 32% of activations.
But these seemingly radical numbers point to a shift in the market. Apple lost 5% from the previous quarter and Android gained the same number of points. Windows Phone rounds out the total with 1% of the market, which almost proves Robert Scoble was right when he thought that Windows should switch their smartphones to Android.
Most observers will notice that BlackBerry is not included in these numbers, but that doesn’t mean the brand has (already?) disappeared from the industry entirely. The explanation is that BlackBerry devices use BlackBerry Enterprise Server to access corporate email addresses. Good Technology cannot track BlackBerry activations. Anyway, the numbers should stay mostly the same, as Tim Cook quoted figures earlier in the year saying IDC has a 59% market share for Apple in the business world.
The bitten apple monster is still strong but a trend reversal has been observed, and on scales as large as that of the smartphone world, 5% is a huge number., especially once lost, benefits exactly the same opponent. We also discovered ten days ago that for the first time in Android’s history, the number of users surpassed iOS.
