Sometimes you wonder why the makers of the Simplenote app haven’t thought of another name. But once you start using it, you get the answer. Simplenote is a truly effortless note-taking app available for Android, iOS, and the web.
Although the application is very simple, it is packed with useful features. So what are these features? And how to take full advantage of all this? You’ll find all the answers along with a few Simplenote Android App tips and tricks.
The following Simplenote tips and tricks are for the Android app, and most of them are for the iOS version as well.
1. Pin Notes
Simplenote only supports one type of view mode – list view. If you use some notes frequently, you can paste them to the top of the list with the help of the pin feature.
To pin a note, press and hold the note and tap the pin icon in the top bar. Pinned notes will have a circular icon next to them.
2. Add Tags
Simplenote does not support folders. So, tags play a very important role to organize notes in this app. Strangely enough, you won’t find the tag option at first glance. You will have to swipe up on a note to view the label option just above the keyboard.
To edit tags, open the navigation drawer and tap Edit next to Tags.
3. Use Markup
Bold, italic, hyperlinks etc when you open the app. You will not find formatting tools such as But if you look closely, you will see two tabs at the top: Edit and Preview. This is because the app uses a markdown language written in an easy-to-read format and Markdown, a great tool for text-to-HTML conversion. Although you don’t have buttons to format text, you can use Markdown.
Let’s say you need to type text in bold. To do this, you must enclose it in a double asterisk. For example **Hello, this is GT**. To italicize text, put a single asterisk. See the Markdown syntax guide for more information.
4. View Edit History
As human beings, we have to make mistakes. Sometimes when editing a note, we may delete a part or an important detail. This can be quite inconvenient as most mobile apps do not have an undo feature. However, Simplenote solves this by allowing you to restore previous versions of a note.
Open the note and tap the Edit history icon to view the edit history and restore previous versions. Then use the slider to go back to previous versions and hit Restore.
5. Characters and Word Count
Simplenote is not the kind of app to save or work with large documents. So the word or character counting feature doesn’t make any sense to me. But if you want to check it, tap the ‘i’ icon at the top of the note.
6. Sort Notes Alphabetically
By default, Simplenote sorts notes in the order in which they were modified. However, you can rearrange them in alphabetical order if you wish.
To do this, follow these steps:
Stage 1: Tap the three-bar menu in the top left corner of the app. Then hit Settings at the bottom.
Step 2: Tap on Sort order and select Alphabetically. You can choose between AZ or ZA.
7. Change Font Size
Few applications allow you to independently change the font size without changing the font size of the device. Fortunately, Simplenote is one of them. Here you can adjust the font size according to your preference.
To do this go to Simplenote Settings and tap on Font Size. Then choose the font size you want.
8. Enable Dark Theme
Are you a fan of dark mode? Simplenote offers that too. I say this because very few apps support dark mode.
To enable the dark theme, go to Simplenote Settings and tap Theme. Then choose the Dark theme.
9. Lock Your Notes
It is better to keep the app locked to protect your notes from malicious people. No, you don’t need to download third-party app lockers, it’s a built-in feature in this app.
To lock the app, go to Simplenote Settings and tap on PIN unlock. Then set a PIN of your preference. After that, you will be asked to enter the PIN each time you open the app.
10. Add Notes Using Voice Assistants
Whether you’re using an iPhone or Android device, you can access the Simplenote app with Google Assistant, Siri, etc. You can add notes using voice assistants such as If you have a Samsung device, you can use Bixby to dictate notes.
To add notes using Assistants, simply say: Take notes using Simplenote.
Note: With iOS 12, you can also use Siri Shortcuts to quickly add notes.
11. Collaborate or Share Link
Simplenote offers three ways to share your notes with others. First, you can share notes normally through any app installed on your device. In this method, the note content will be copied and pasted into the application.
Second, you can create a public link and share it with others. Third, if you want to let others edit your notes, you can add them as collaborators. To share notes, tap the Share icon on the note and choose the sharing method.
