WhatsApp will block screenshots of single-image photos and videos

Facebook continues to make improvements to its instant messaging application WhatsApp. Last week, the app made official the possibility of making video calls with 32 participants. Other less flashy but still significant changes are also in the testing phase. According to the WABetaInfo site, a feature block screenshots in single views will be under implementation. Some beta testers of WhatsApp on Android have this new feature which is more of a limitation than anything else, let’s face it.

Not a single view not the invention of whatsapp. If this feature appeared on the Facebook app in August 2021, it wasn’t innovative as it was SnapChat that Mark Zuckerberg’s company inspired at the time. Single view allows you to send a photo or video that, as the name suggests, disappears after viewing. This temporary and hidden feature has made SnapChat very successful and has led to its massive adoption by younger viewers. WhatsApp often imitates its competitors and was quick to offer the ability to permanently delete messages or even view photos only once.

In Single View mode, the photo will self-destruct, but you can still take a screenshot!

Like any innovation, this feature of course led to abuses. Malicious people quickly realized that they could take screenshots of images sent to them. Non-disappearing captures. Depending on their nature and the nature of the people who receive them, they can lead to actual extortion and/or blackmail attempts.

As it happens, it’s taking a strangely long time for WhatsApp one-view screenshot blocking to become available. This functionality is already implemented in other apps that contain sensitive information, such as Google Pay. When you try to take a screenshot in an application that displays sensitive information, a notification appears and informs you that this action is not possible.

However, unlike SnapChat, WhatsApp does not notify the sender that the recipient tried to take the photo; this is useful information and can help sort out their relationship. This feature, available in WhatsApp v2.22.22.3, is currently in beta for some users.Android only. Note that if you use the Single View feature in WhatsApp or SnapChat, whether implemented or not, nothing prevents your recipients from taking a photo of the image sent with another device. And against it, programmers will never be able to do anything.
