You have mastered Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Finally you are ready to tackle TikTok. But don’t get too comfortable – a hot new social media app has entered the villa. Gen Z is crazy about it, but what? is is Be realistic?
Unlike its alternatives, BeReal offers an unfiltered, unplanned social experience. In some ways, the app combines the freedom of Instagram’s early days (minus the Valencia filter) and TikTok’s friendly, all-around goodness.
We’ll tell you everything you need to know about BeReal, including what it is, how it works, and why it’s different.
What is BeReal?
BeReal is a photo sharing app that asks users to post an unfiltered photo every day.
BeReal was launched in late 2019, but its popularity started to explode in mid-2022. It is currently the best Social Networking app in the App Store and is roughly loaded 29.5 million times.
How does BeReal work?
BeReal app sends a push notification — ⚠️ BeReal time. ⚠️ — to all users at a random time every day. Users in the same time zone will receive the alert at the same time. They later had two minutes to take photos and share them with their followers.
and not Really and just one photo. BeReal uses your front and rear cameras to simultaneously take a selfie with everything you do. So if you’re used to the beauty filter, be prepared: The app doesn’t have any photo editing features.
Two-minute countdown, no planning, no crafting, and no aggregation of content. You share what you’re doing when the notification arrives – it could be 11:00 one day or 16:00 the next.
You can retake your photos in two minutes, but your followers will know if you did it (and how many times). If you miss the deadline, you can still send it, but your BeReal will be tagged “delivered late”.

After you submit your BeReal, you can browse through your friends’ photos and see what they’re up to. Unlike all other social platforms, you don’t have the option to like other photos – if you want to interact with a post, you have to take a reaction selfie or write a comment
And if you’re in an ambush, you’re out of luck. You can continue to use the app, but you won’t be able to see any of your friends’ photos without posting your own.

Of course, novelty is definitely part of the charm (remember Peach? RIP). But the app’s approach takes a fresh look at the overly curated content that dominates most social networks.
