Snapchat has been around since 2011 and has become one of the most used and important social media apps. No wonder teens, with 190 million daily active users and 37 million in the US, consider it the most important social network, with Instagram in second place and Facebook and Twitter in third.
It started out as a simple enough idea: You could send a picture to a friend and it would disappear once you looked at it. From this humble beginning, the app has grown to include a wide variety of features and functions. It has come a long way from adding stickers to your images to various filters and even augmented reality overlays.
As Snapchat has grown and evolved, the developers have tried to make it easier for you to connect and celebrate friends and keep track of your activities on the app.
There are Friend Emojis that show you who you Snap Snaps at the most and whether you have mutual friends. Until recently, there were also Trophies where you were rewarded for things like turning the camera five times in a video Snap or sending 50 black and white Snaps.
This year, however, the Trophies have vanished into obscurity with little fanfare. This change was so sudden and unannounced that in fact this article was actually going to be about them until we realized they were gone!
Instead, Snapchat is now introducing a new feature: Charms. Currently only available on iOS, Charms is the new way to appreciate your friendships with Snapchat users.
How Do You Get Charms?
First of all, have an iPhone as it is not yet available on Android.
Amulets are added to your account based on how you interact with your friends, what kind of relationship you have, and even whether your astrological signs are compatible. You get Friend Emojis, Display Names, Bitmoji related ones, and new ones are always in the works, so it’s worth checking back regularly to see what you’ve got.
They’re not part of a public trophy case, though. These are only visible to you and your friend to whom the Charm is valid, so if you unfriend or block them, the Charms will disappear as well.
How Will You Display Your Jewelry?
Open Snapchat and tap the ‘Friends’ icon in the bottom left. Next, tap on one of your friends, then tap ‘View Friendship’ when the menu pops up. This will take you to your Dating Profile.
Scroll down to the bottom and you should see a list of talismans that you and your friend have earned. If you tap on each, it will tell you what you got them for. Swipe down or tap outside of the Charm to make it disappear again.
How to Hide Talismans
If for some reason you don’t like the talismans you’ve earned, getting rid of them is easy enough. If you choose to hide one, it will also disappear for your friend.
Follow the same process as above to access your Friend Profile. Tap on the Charm you want to hide to open information about it. Next, tap the three-dot option menu icon, then tap ‘Hide Attraction’ and finally tap ‘Hide’.
If you want to hide a Birthday or Astrology Talisman, you must turn off Birthday Party in your Profile Account settings. Note that you can only edit your birthday settings a limited number of times, so don’t change it if you’re not sure you want it. It can take up to an hour for changes to affect your Charms, so don’t panic if they don’t disappear right away.
How to Get Hidden Jewelry Back
Everyone makes mistakes and we can all change our minds sometimes. If you’ve kept a talisman in a pike fit or thumb slip, here’s how you can restore them to their former glory.
Go back to the Dating Profile with the Secret Charm turned on and scroll down. Tap the ‘Hidden’ button to see a list of all the Talismans you’ve gotten rid of. The newest will be first on the list.
Tap the name of the Charm you want to get back in your life and then tap the ‘Restore’ button and hey presto, it’s back. Unless it’s expired since you hid it.
Totally Fascinating
And here we are, everything you need to know about Snapchat’s new Charms. So, unless you’re on Android, all you need to know is that you’re currently unattractive in Snapchat’s eyes. Sorry, Androids.
