TikTok is testing a dislike button in comments to help moderate

The dislike button poses a formidable problem for social networks. On the one hand, it allows you to express your opinion in the same way as the more traditional ones, as well as warn other users of the potential low quality of the content of the contact. On the other hand, it can be a source of harassment campaigns harmful to the mental health of creators. These are the reasons why YouTube decided to remove it from its platform last November.

Usually not content with being inspired by his spiritual brother, TikTok decided to go the opposite direction this time. Indeed, in a recent blog post, the social network announced that a handful of users can already downvote comments. However, this dislike button is nothing like what we already know. First, as noted, it’s only available in the comments section. Therefore, it is impossible to use it directly on video.

TikTok just adds dislike button to comments

Secondly, no counter will appear on the screen of users, whether they are the author or the viewers of the video. Only those who dislike a comment will be notified of its action. So this button will only act as a report for moderation teams. The more dislikes a comment gets, the more likely it is to be deleted. However, TikTok explains that it will not replace the traditional reporting method.

“This community feedback will add to a number of factors we already use to ensure the comments section is always relevant and a place for genuine engagement.”explains the Chinese social network. A new way to add to the platform’s current efforts to make the comment space healthier. The feature is being tested worldwide.
