In just a few years, TikTok has experienced a meteoric rise that is the envy of other social networks. The platform, which saw thousands of influencers followed by millions of users emerge at the same time, also experienced an explosion in its revenues. According to data compiled by Data.ai, the French spent 11.2 million euros on gifts in 2021. The following year, this figure increased to 52 million euros, reaching 80 million euros in 2023.
These “gifts” are actually virtual tokens that users buy with real money on TikTok and then distribute to their favorite influencers as a sign of support. The latter is particularly popular throughout life as it is one of the main interaction methods for the community, similar to what Twitch offers for subscribers. It is a very profitable process for both creators and TikTok.

In fact, the social network receives 50% commission on these virtual gifts, or 40 million euros in 2023, for both itself and influencers, with the expenses made by French users alone. Some creators claim to have earned at least 900,000 euros in 2023 thanks to TikTok. Unsurprisingly, this puts the Chinese platform at the forefront of the most lucrative social networks in the world.
Since its founding, it has generated $10 billion from in-app purchases; $4 billion of this occurred last year alone. At this stage, only mobile games or streaming platforms can compete with the Chinese giant. This is not the only source of income for TikTok, which estimates that it can earn more than 44 million euros from advertising, especially in France.
