Tagging is one of the more social aspects of social media, and done at the right time and in the right context, it’s a great way to share moments or memories online. It’s an excellent way to provoke conversation, share something important or interesting, and add a layer of interaction. This tutorial will show you how to tag someone in an Instagram Story.
Tagging has always existed and is a way to link an image, comment, post or video to someone who is involved in or is interested in it. Facebook has been using tagging for years and it mostly works really well.
When you tag someone, you add a layer to a post with a hyperlink to that person’s profile. Alerts that person about your uploaded Story or post and highlights it on their profile. It also allows other people to see who else is in a post. If you tagged on Facebook, Instagram uses almost the same system for adding and removing tags.
I think tagging is such an important feature that I will also show you how to tag in Instagram posts and comments.
Tag someone in an Instagram Story
Tagging is done through a selection during Story creation. In addition to adding a title and description to your story, you can also tag people. Here’s how.
- Open Instagram and swipe to open Story mode as usual.
- Build your story.
- Add a sticker from the peeling face sticker icon at the top of the screen.
- Select the @mention tag from the selection.
- Type the name of the person you want to tag and select from the list.
- Edit, move or resize the label tag as needed.
- Post your story as normal.
You can tag up to ten people per story. They’ll each get a push notification on their Instagram that you’ve tagged them, and they’ll be able to see what you’re posting.
Remove a hashtag from an Instagram Story
In the unlikely event that someone tags you in an Instagram Story and you don’t want to be tagged, you can remove it. As with Facebook, you can choose the option to remove the tag and the tag will disappear from everyone’s view.
- Select the Story you’re tagged in.
- Select your display username.
- Select Remote Tag or Remove Me from Post.
- Select Remove or Yes, I’m sure to confirm.
The tag will be removed, but the original Story, image or video will remain untagged. You can do this on Instagram posts, comments, or whatever you want.
Tag someone in an Instagram post
Tagging someone in a post is very similar to doing it in a Story.
- Compose your post as you normally would.
- When you come to set a title, select Tag People from the page.
- Select a friend face or item you want to tag.
- Select ‘Who Is This’ from the page and search for the person.
- Select their profile from the list.
- Select the checkmark or Done when you’re done.
- Publish normally.
Like stories, you can repeat the above for up to ten people in a single image and they will all be tagged. They will also receive a notification that they have been tagged.
Tag someone in your Instagram comment
If you want to involve someone in a conversation on Instagram, it’s very simple. It uses the ‘@’ feature like other social networks and works exactly the same.
- Add your comment to a post or Story.
- Add ‘@NAME’ to the comment. Change NAME for the username of the person you want to tag.
- Choose them from the list.
- Complete your comment and select Submit.
As usual, they’ll see a push notification alerting them to comments and tags, and they’ll be able to respond as they see fit.
Not everyone wants to be tagged in every picture or comment you make, so only use the feature when appropriate. Some people are very happy to be tagged, others not so much. While there is the ability to remove a tag, it’s a pain if you didn’t want to be tagged in the first place, so know who you’re tagging and how they will react to it.
