Is your company’s fearless leader social? (And I’m not talking about the kind that joins you for beer.)

Not really. A report from CEO.com found that 61 percent of CEOs have no social presence, and 70 percent of those who do use LinkedIn only. This is despite the fact that 76 percent of all executives believe it’s a good idea for CEOs to be social, according to an infographic by Weber Shandwick.

Our own CEO, Ryan Holmes, wrote recently about the importance of having CEOs on social media. “The biggest motivator for CEOs to get on social media may be a simple requirement. Social media represents a cultural change, not just a technological one, and it has already made its way into the workplace… In the end, it is very difficult for a CEO to guide this transformation without “taking” social media on some level – ideally personal 1.”

In an increasingly social workforce, it’s clear that CEOs need to do more than just be social and lead.

The reluctance of many CEOs to use social networks serves to highlight the importance of the work of CEOs who use social media to establish opinion leaders in their industries and solidify both their companies and personal brands.

Moyens I/O collaborated with global CEO experts and coaches Xinfu to compile a comprehensive list of the top 100 CEOs on social media. The rankings combine both quantitative and qualitative factors to identify which CEOs are making an impact.

One of our biggest measures of who to include was decided by answering the question: Who creates real value-added content for their followers? We measured this in terms of each CEO’s uniqueness, industry leadership, and insight into their own organization.

CEOs we see actively and consistently contributing to the leadership agenda are ranked higher. People that we think are overly self-promotional, too official, or who don’t seem to be creating their own content. We also took into account each CEO’s Klout score.

Without further ado, these are CEOs who have made a name for themselves and are contributing to the conversation on social media (click any listing to connect to their social profiles).
