Instagram finally offers end-to-end encryption for messaging, among other features

Meta gave us a bit of a scare last week when the linked messaging plan between Instagram and Messenger was abandoned. It was easy, then, to think that the company would eventually drop Instagram messaging, the newest of its services, despite promising to integrate end-to-end encryption. Fortunately, the group did not go back on their word.

In a press release, it announced that the technology would also be coming to the Instagram messaging app, just a few days after Messenger. There’s no exact date yet, but it’s sure to happen soon. As proof of its good intentions, Meta has introduced other features aimed at strengthening the security of conversations on Instagram.

Your Instagram conversations have never been more private

In fact, the social network also wants to ensure that no one can access your conversations. To do this, I introduce three new encryption methods that will activate when you connect from a new device:

  • pin code: 6-digit code that you and your contact must enter
  • Google Drive key: If your Google account is linked to your smartphone, it will be activated automatically
  • single device : You can decide that only one device can access messaging and that device will be blocked on other devices

Finally, other features such as editing messages will also be available for a limited time. Let’s also talk about temporary messages that will be inspired by those that already exist on Messenger and WhatsApp. Finally, as we already announced to you, it will soon be possible to choose not to activate the “seen” tag in a conversation, so you can ignore your connection completely without penalty.

It is not yet known when all its features will be available for general use.
