The Reddit mobile website is known to cause quite a bit of trouble for its users, whether they are using an iPhone or an Android smartphone. Especially the private messaging function, which can sometimes be turned off.
It probably doesn’t help that the Reddit mobile app isn’t very intuitive either. Here are a few ways to enjoy a fully working reddit website.
Access Your Inbox
The reason this method is in the first place is because it should work every time, whether you are using an Android or iOS device.
- Tap the envelope button located in the bottom sidebar.
- Tap the pencil icon.
- Type a username.
- Write your message.
- Press Submit.
Send Private Message Using Recipient’s Profile Page
Another thing you can do is use the same method available on the full desktop version of the website. By first accessing the user’s profile page.
- Tap a user’s name.
- Tap on the link titled “send a message” from their profile page.
- Write your message and press send.
This will send the message directly to the targeted user’s inbox.
However, you should remember that this does not always work. The mobile version of Reddit may have some glitches with some older OS versions on both Android and iOS device.
What to Do If Mobile Website Isn’t Working Properly?
The Reddit mobile app and the mobile version of the website will not always work as well as the full desktop version of the website. Given the popularity of Reddit, it’s somewhat surprising that it still lacks optimization.
So what can you do if you still want full access to your favorite topics? Or if you want to talk to some redditor friends?
Well, there is a workaround and it involves using the desktop version of the website from your mobile device, smartphone or tablet.
- Open the apps list from your Home Screen.
- Tap to launch the Chrome browser.
- Type reddit.com and launch it.
- From the mobile version of the website, tap the three-line settings icon.
- Scroll down the list of options until you see the “Show desktop site” option.
- Tap this option and wait for the desktop version of the website to load.
Now you can send private messages, check your inbox, reply to conversations, etc. You should be able to use all features such as unhindered.
If for some reason this does not work, you can also try the method below.
Launch Reddit in Incognito Mode
- Go to your home screen.
- Open your apps list.
- Tap the Chrome web browser icon.
- Tap the three-dot icon.
- Tap on the new incognito tab option.
- Type reddit.com in the address bar.
If you use this method, you should no longer be redirected to the mobile version of reddit. However, as you already know, this also means that you cannot access the saved credentials.
So, enter your username and password to access reddit. Whether you’re using a PC, Android or iOS device, you’ll need to do this every time you use reddit in incognito mode.
The upside is that there shouldn’t be any bugs or glitches to worry about with missing features. Note, however, that the desktop version of reddit will not be optimized for use on a smartphone touchscreen.
You often need to resize to hit buttons correctly, read text, or access links.
Reddit Mobile Falls Behind Expectations
For a platform as useful and popular as Reddit, it’s disappointing that private messaging isn’t getting enough attention from developers. While the desktop website generally works flawlessly, its mobile user base is still waiting for a show of affection.
